Leonardo has secured a £1 billion contract to supply 23 medium-lift helicopters to the UK Ministry of Defence. Announced for production at the company’s Yeovil facility, the contract guarantees the future of the site and more than 3,000 jobs.
The new fleet will consist of AW149 helicopters, designed to work alongside uncrewed aircraft. This development marks a significant milestone for Leonardo, ensuring that future international military orders can be manufactured within the UK. The deal also designates Yeovil as a centre of excellence for military helicopter autonomy, supporting the UK’s investment in Proteus, the nation’s first autonomous uncrewed air system. Proteus, developed by Leonardo, recently completed its inaugural flight.
Roberto Cingolani, Leonardo’s chief executive, previously highlighted the risk to the Yeovil facility’s future had the contract not been awarded. This contract firmly secures the site’s status as a strategic asset for the UK’s defence sector.
The demand for new medium-lift helicopters extends to around 20 countries globally. Leonardo anticipates that, in conjunction with its other helicopter models, international orders could amass over £15 billion in exports throughout the next decade. According to a spokesperson from the Ministry of Defence, this contract could potentially sustain a total of 3,900 jobs, reflecting a 20% increase in the workforce.
The strategic deal not only fortifies the UK’s defence capabilities but also underscores the country’s commitment to fostering technological advancements and supporting local employment through significant manufacturing contracts.
