BIG DAISHOWA Introduces Sphinx Drinox Pilot Step Drill for High-Precision 3xD Drilling!

Friday 19 December 2025, 7:37:50 AM

BIG DAISHOWA has expanded its precision drilling portfolio with the launch of the Sphinx Drinox Pilot Step Drill at 3xD, a solution engineered to meet the growing demand for accuracy, productivity, and reliability in small-diameter drilling applications. Designed with a unique step-drill geometry, the tool is developed to significantly improve drilling performance in challenging materials while delivering measurable gains in tool life, coolant efficiency, and cycle time.

According to the company, the Sphinx Drinox Pilot Step Drill is capable of achieving up to three times longer tool life, three times higher coolant-through output, and drilling speeds up to three times faster compared to conventional drilling solutions. These advantages make the tool particularly attractive for manufacturers operating in high-precision industries such as aerospace, medical, and advanced engineering, where small-diameter holes and demanding materials are common.

The drill is available in diameters ranging from 0.70 mm to 3.00 mm, with fine incremental steps of 0.05 mm. This broad and precise size range allows manufacturers to select the exact diameter required for tight-tolerance applications, reducing the need for secondary operations and improving overall process efficiency. The 3xD drilling capability ensures stable hole quality while maintaining excellent control over chip formation and evacuation.

A key performance feature of the Sphinx Drinox is its advanced coolant-through design. Integrated coolant channels are optimized to maximize coolant flow directly to the cutting edge, helping to reduce heat buildup and flush chips effectively from the cutting zone. This enhanced coolant delivery not only supports higher cutting speeds but also contributes to longer and more predictable tool life, especially when drilling deeper holes in difficult-to-machine materials.

The tool is further enhanced by a newly developed ultra-thin TiSiN coating. BIG DAISHOWA states that this coating provides exceptional tool sharpness while maintaining high wear resistance. The ultra-thin layer improves chip evacuation and minimizes the tendency of workpiece material to adhere to the cutting edge, a common challenge when machining stainless steels, titanium, and heat-resistant nickel- or cobalt-based alloys. By reducing built-up edge and friction, the coating helps maintain consistent cutting performance throughout the tool’s lifespan.

Another defining feature of the Sphinx Drinox Pilot Step Drill is its 90-degree cutting step and tool head geometry. This design is based on proven high-performance cutting geometries and enables precise pilot drilling followed by stable hole enlargement in a single operation. The step-drill concept improves positional accuracy, reduces tool deflection, and enhances overall hole quality, particularly in materials that are prone to work hardening or poor chip control.

With its combination of precision geometry, optimized coolant delivery, and advanced coating technology, the Sphinx Drinox Pilot Step Drill at 3xD offers manufacturers a reliable solution for high-performance drilling in demanding applications. The tool supports faster production cycles, improved process stability, and reduced tooling costs, making it a strong choice for shops seeking to improve productivity without compromising on accuracy or surface quality.
