Bystronic Strengthens Laser Portfolio with Acquisition of Coherent’s Tools for Materials Processing Business!
Bystronic has completed the acquisition of the Tools for Materials Processing business unit from Coherent Corp., marking a significant strategic step in expanding its technological capabilities and market reach beyond core sheet metal cutting. The move allows Bystronic to enter new, high-growth application areas while broadening its laser technology portfolio.
Through this acquisition, Bystronic gains access to markets such as medical technology, semiconductor manufacturing and a wider range of general industrial applications. These sectors demand high-precision and highly reliable laser solutions, and the acquired business brings established expertise in areas that complement Bystronic’s existing strengths in laser cutting and automation for metal fabrication.
A key outcome of the transaction is the expansion of Bystronic’s application offering to include advanced laser processes such as micro material processing, marking, engraving and drilling. These technologies open up opportunities in industries where fine structures, tight tolerances and minimal thermal impact are critical, including electronics, medical devices and precision components. By integrating these capabilities, Bystronic aims to offer more comprehensive end-to-end laser solutions across multiple manufacturing domains.
As part of the acquisition, Bystronic has also secured the rights to the well-known Rofin brand. Rofin will continue to operate under the newly created Bystronic Rofin business unit, preserving its strong market recognition while benefiting from Bystronic’s global footprint, service network and strategic direction. The new unit employs approximately 400 people and is headquartered in Gilching, Germany, which will remain a central hub for development and operations.
Bystronic stated that the integration of the acquired business will enhance its ability to serve customers with more diverse laser-based manufacturing needs. The combination of Bystronic’s expertise in industrial laser cutting systems and automation with Rofin’s established technologies in precision laser applications is expected to accelerate innovation and strengthen competitiveness across global markets.
The acquisition aligns with Bystronic’s long-term strategy to evolve from a pure sheet metal specialist into a broader solutions provider for laser-based manufacturing. By extending its reach into microprocessing and high-precision applications, the company is positioning itself to support customers across the full spectrum of laser-enabled production, from large-format cutting to intricate, high-value components.
With this move, Bystronic reinforces its commitment to growth through targeted acquisitions that add complementary technologies, skilled teams and access to new industries. The company expects the expanded portfolio to create new opportunities for cross-industry innovation while delivering greater value to customers seeking advanced, reliable and versatile laser processing solutions.
