Tsugami Inaugurates World-Class Assembly Plant and India’s First Japanese Machine Tool Foundry in Chennai!

Tsugami Precision Engineering India Private Limited has marked a historic milestone in India’s precision manufacturing sector with the inauguration of its world-class assembly plant and integrated foundry at Oragadam, Chennai. Representing an investment of ₹300 crores, the project is significant not only for its scale but also for the fact that it includes the first-ever machine tool foundry established in India by a Japanese manufacturer. This development stands among the largest commitments made by a Japanese machine tool company in the country, further cementing India’s position as a preferred destination for high-precision engineering investments.

The inauguration ceremony witnessed the presence of key dignitaries including Arun Roy, IAS, Secretary – Industries, Government of Tamil Nadu; Kaoru Shiraishi, Director General, JETRO; senior Tsugami leadership such as Toshihiro Serikawa, Mami Matsushita, Veera Suresh Kumar; K. Balasubramaniam, Founder of Tsugami India and Chairman & MD of Proteck Machinery; and Raghu Chandrasekaran, Managing Director of Tsugami India. Their presence underscored the strategic importance of the project for Indo-Japanese industrial collaboration.

Spread across 15 acres within the SIPCOT Industrial Park, the advanced facility features an assembly plant with an annual production capacity of 3,000 CNC machines and a foundry capable of producing 6,000 tonnes of castings each year. Together, the two units will generate employment for over 1,000 professionals, while also catalyzing job creation within the broader Oragadam–Sriperumbudur ecosystem. This region has emerged as one of India’s most dynamic hubs for electronics, automotive components and precision engineering.

In his address, Kaoru Shiraishi described the launch as a landmark in Indo-Japanese industrial relations, reflecting a partnership grounded in trust, innovation and mutual respect. He emphasized that the fusion of Japanese precision with India’s technical talent and manufacturing strength will create immense value and significantly enhance industrial capabilities in the region.

Arun Roy, IAS echoed this sentiment, noting Tamil Nadu’s longstanding relationship with Japanese companies and the state’s appeal as a global manufacturing destination. He stated that the new facility reaffirms Japan’s confidence in Tamil Nadu’s talent pool, industrial infrastructure and policy environment, while unlocking new opportunities for youth and local suppliers.

K. Balasubramaniam highlighted that the project represents a transformative leap for India’s precision-engineering sector. By enabling true end-to-end production—from raw metal to finished CNC machines—Tsugami India is poised to elevate domestic manufacturing capabilities and deepen the localization of advanced technologies. He noted that this investment would set off a snowball effect across the country’s engineering ecosystem, strengthening supply chains and spurring innovation.

Tsugami’s new plant and foundry are built to global benchmarks, enabling the company to scale production while adhering to the strict quality standards associated with the Japanese brand. This vertically integrated approach—rare in India’s machine tool sector—positions Tsugami India to support high-demand industries such as automotive, aerospace, electronics and medical devices with even greater precision and reliability.

A globally respected name in CNC machine tools, Tsugami is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and recorded revenues of nearly USD 700 million in FY 2024–25. Tsugami India, established in 2013 as a joint venture with Proteck Machinery, has grown into one of the country’s leading CNC machine tool manufacturers, supported by a nationwide network of technical centres and a strong commitment to innovation, quality and customer service.

With the inauguration of this landmark facility, Tsugami India has set a new benchmark for precision manufacturing in the country—one that will drive technological advancement, strengthen industrial capabilities and reinforce India’s position in the global machine tool industry.
