NCMT and EVTEC Scale Up EV Component Machining

Thursday 19 March 2026, 8:29:37 AM

Scaling production for electric vehicle components while maintaining tight machining tolerances presents significant challenges. In a new case study, NCMT Ltd showcases how EVTEC has successfully transitioned from early process validation to a scalable production line centred on Makino horizontal machining centres.

The project initially involved three machines to validate the process. It has since developed into a high-precision platform capable of machining aluminium die-cast Electric Drive Unit (EDU) components with positional tolerances of approximately 40 microns. This level of precision is critical in ensuring the performance and efficiency of electric vehicles.

EVTEC’s strategic evolution is a focal point of the study. The machining approach taken by EVTEC, using Makino a-nx series machines, highlights the reasons for their selection. The series is known for its accuracy and reliability in precision machining applications, making it an ideal choice for high-tolerance manufacturing.

Additionally, phased investment played a crucial role. By adopting a phased approach, EVTEC managed to mitigate risks while enabling scalability. This strategy has proven effective in balancing investment with production demands, thus fostering a more resilient production environment.

The importance of technical partnership and comprehensive through-life support has also been emphasized. Such collaboration ensures that both equipment and processes adapt and evolve to meet the demanding requirements of the electric vehicle industry.

NCMT Ltd and EVTEC’s collaboration illustrates the innovative approaches required in the advanced manufacturing sector, particularly in electric vehicle production. Their focus on precision, phased investment, and strong partnerships provides valuable insights for manufacturers aiming to enhance their machining capabilities.
