In a significant move to enhance the efficiency of India’s commercial vehicle sector, ZF India has signed a partnership agreement with a prominent Indian commercial vehicle manufacturer to supply thousands of high-performance manual and automatic transmissions for heavy-duty trucks. The deal, finalized in March 2025, centers around the provision of advanced 9-speed transmissions designed for trucks with engine power exceeding 300 horsepower.
This partnership marks a major step toward bolstering India’s heavy-duty truck manufacturing capabilities. ZF India will be supplying two key transmission models: the EcoMid manual transmissions and the EcoTronic Mid automatic transmissions. These transmissions are specifically designed for trucks with a gross weight of over 25 tonnes and capable of handling a torque range of up to 1300Nm. The production of these transmissions will take place at ZF’s manufacturing plant located in Chakan, Pune, contributing to India’s “Make in India” initiative aimed at increasing domestic manufacturing and reducing reliance on imports.
ZF India is known for its strength in India’s high-torque transmission market, and this new deal enhances its presence further with its EcoMid system, which is optimized for commercial vehicles weighing up to 55 tonnes. The EcoMid system is available in both direct drive and overdrive configurations, offering flexibility for different vehicle needs. Additionally, ZF offers 12-speed transmissions that can endure up to 3200Nm of torque, further reinforcing its leadership in heavy-duty transmission solutions.
One of the key advantages of these transmissions is their ability to improve the overall driving experience. ZF’s advanced technology reduces driver fatigue, enhances fuel efficiency, and extends the lifespan of critical components like clutches. By integrating these transmissions into heavy-duty trucks, the partnership is set to increase operational efficiency, reduce maintenance costs, and provide a smoother driving experience, especially on long-haul routes.
Akash Passey, President of ZF Group in India, expressed the company’s continued commitment to delivering operational efficiency solutions, emphasizing ZF’s long-standing presence in the Indian market, spanning over six decades. He also highlighted that this partnership is part of ZF’s ongoing mission to support the evolving demands of the Indian commercial vehicle sector.
P Kaniappan, Senior Vice President at ZF Group, added that these advanced transmissions would play a pivotal role in advancing the commercial vehicle industry’s push toward greater operational efficiency. This partnership aligns with India’s broader goal of enhancing domestic production capabilities and supporting the growth of the commercial vehicle sector with cutting-edge, fuel-efficient technologies.
By supplying these state-of-the-art transmissions, ZF India is positioning itself as a key player in the country’s growing heavy-duty truck market, which is increasingly focusing on enhancing efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. The collaboration with the Indian commercial vehicle manufacturer further strengthens ZF’s foothold in India and demonstrates its dedication to providing solutions that drive the future of mobility in one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing markets.
