SME Focus is the programme showcasing our brilliant SMEs. For manufacturers, by manufacturers. The weekly show…
Oxford-based electric motor pioneer YASA has unveiled a major expansion of its manufacturing capabilities, investing £12 million into its Yarnton facility to create the UK’s first axial-flux electric motor super factory. This state-of-the-art upgrade significantly increases production capacity to over 25,000 units per year, while setting new global benchmarks in electric motor technology and manufacturing quality.
A global leader in axial flux motor design and development, YASA continues to push the boundaries of electric drive technology for electric and hybrid vehicles. Its motors deliver up to four times the performance of traditional radial flux electric motors — a key advantage as demand for high-efficiency, high-power propulsion grows.
YASA CTO and founder Tim Woolmer said:
“With the opening of the world’s most advanced axial-flux motor manufacturing facility, we’re now taking our operational strategy to the next level. This transformation enables us to apply our technology with even greater precision, speed, and scale, reinforcing YASA’s position as a global leader — and as part of the Mercedes-Benz Group, we’re poised to lead the future of electric propulsion.”
The new 60,000 ft² facility integrates a seamless manufacturing ecosystem, allowing all processes to take place under one roof. Key advancements include four custom-built coil and bar manufacturing cells, advanced CNC winding and impregnation systems, laser stripping and brazing, high-capacity ovens, rotor balancing, and stator laser welding. These processes support full quality control across dimensional, electrical, and leak testing metrics.
Richard Firmstone, Operations Director, noted:
“We’ve transformed our production flow to optimise safety, quality, and flexibility, with full material and process traceability. This gives us the agility to respond quickly to shifting customer demands while maintaining the highest standards.”
Andy North, Commercial Director, added:
“The manufacturing advances we’ve introduced allow YASA to continue outperforming radial flux technologies by delivering more compact and powerful motor solutions. We’re better positioned than ever to serve OEM partners like Ferrari and Lamborghini, and to expand globally.”
While the expansion has been privately funded, YASA maintains a close relationship with the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK (APC), which supported the original site development. Ongoing collaboration ensures that cutting-edge innovation remains firmly rooted in the UK.
Joerg Miska, CEO, concluded:
“This enhanced facility is a cornerstone of YASA’s strategy to diversify its product and customer portfolio, unlocking new commercial opportunities while reinforcing the UK’s role as a hub for advanced electric propulsion.”
