In a significant development for West Bengal’s energy and employment sectors, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated JSW Energy’s state-of-the-art ultra-supercritical thermal power plant in Salboni, Paschim Medinipur. With an investment of ₹16,000 crore, the facility will generate 1,600 MW of clean, pollution-free energy, making a substantial contribution to the region’s power production and environmental goals.
The JSW power plant will consist of two 800 MW units designed to deliver high-efficiency, low-emission electricity, marking a step forward in the state’s clean energy transition. This initiative is poised to provide vital support to the grid, enhance energy security, and help the state meet its growing energy demands without compromising on environmental sustainability. The plant, expected to produce clean energy, will play a pivotal role in reducing West Bengal’s carbon footprint while providing reliable power to industries and households alike.
The power plant is also a major economic driver for West Bengal, expected to create over 15,000 jobs during construction and operation, providing a much-needed boost to the region’s employment landscape. The establishment of this plant will not only address the state’s energy needs but also stimulate local economies by offering both direct and indirect job opportunities.
In line with its commitment to long-term industrial growth, JSW Group Chairman, Sajjan Jindal, announced the development of a 2,000-acre JSW Industrial Park near the plant. This industrial park will provide cutting-edge facilities for future industries, incorporating renewable energy into its infrastructure to promote sustainable development. This ambitious initiative will drive industrial growth in the region while encouraging environmentally responsible practices.
A critical aspect of the project is the establishment of a skill-development center in the region, which will help train the local workforce, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills to thrive in the evolving energy and industrial sectors. This facility will provide valuable training in various technical and operational skills, creating a skilled workforce that can sustain long-term growth for the plant and the surrounding industrial park.
JSW Energy’s power plant is backed by a 25-year power purchase agreement with the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL), ensuring a reliable and sustainable partnership that will benefit both the energy provider and the state for decades to come. The plant will also use domestic coal under the SHAKTI B (IV) policy, reinforcing its commitment to utilizing local resources and contributing to the Indian government’s vision for energy independence.
This new project underlines JSW Energy’s commitment to supporting India’s transition toward more sustainable energy solutions while driving economic development and job creation in West Bengal. The project is set to become a cornerstone in the state’s industrial and energy future by combining clean energy generation with skill development and infrastructure growth.
