Walter Expands Xtra·tec XT M5130 Shoulder Milling Cutter Line with 29 New Inch Sizes

Walter has announced a major expansion of its Xtra·tec XT M5130 shoulder milling cutter line, adding 29 new inch sizes to meet growing demand for precision and versatility in machining applications. With this expansion, the total number of tools in the M5130 lineup now reaches 119, offering a comprehensive solution for a wide range of milling needs.

The new additions support 09, 12, and 16 mm inserts, with diameters ranging from 0.5 to 5.0 inches, and extend up to 6.0 inches in the full product range. Unlike traditional methods that reduce the clearance angle to control cutting forces, Walter has taken an innovative approach by increasing the clearance angle and rotating the insert position by 8°. This change preserves the tool’s effective cutting angle while significantly improving stability, tool life, and process reliability.

Engineered for shoulder, face, ramping, pocket, and circular milling, the M5130 is highly versatile and capable of machining a broad spectrum of materials, including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and difficult-to-machine alloys—covering all major ISO groups (P, M, K, N, S, and H).

The cutter also features a 90-degree approach angle, minimizing the need for additional finishing operations. Multiple pitch options and a reinforced insert seat design contribute to greater rigidity, reduced vibration, and enhanced productivity in both roughing and finishing operations.

With a wide variety of nine insert geometries and 11 insert grades, including polycrystalline diamond (PCD), the expanded M5130 line is positioned as a go-to shoulder milling solution for industries requiring high precision, material flexibility, and operational efficiency.

This product update demonstrates Walter’s ongoing commitment to delivering cutting-edge tooling solutions tailored to the evolving needs of manufacturers across aerospace, automotive, general engineering, and energy sectors.
