SME Focus Episode 260: Gary Sheader – The Manufacturers Alliance
SME Focus is the programme showcasing our brilliant SMEs. For manufacturers, by manufacturers. The weekly show…

In a strategic move to enhance customer support and operational efficiency in North America, Walter has inaugurated a new polycrystalline diamond (PCD) reconditioning service centre in Columbia City, Indiana. The 5,000-square-foot facility is now fully operational and represents a significant investment in localized tooling support for customers in automotive, aerospace, and general engineering.
Equipped with six advanced reconditioning machines, the new centre is designed to meet the growing demand for cost-effective, sustainable reconditioning of PCD tooling—an increasingly important solution for manufacturers seeking to extend tool life, reduce waste, and optimize production costs. By bringing these capabilities closer to its North American customer base, Walter aims to minimize lead times, reduce inventory burdens, and provide a faster turnaround on high-performance tool maintenance.
“This new facility allows us to respond to customer needs faster than ever,” said Aaron Eltzroth, Business Development at Walter. “By localizing our PCD reconditioning capabilities, we’re helping customers maximize tool life, reduce waste, and manage their production costs more effectively.”
The launch of the new service centre follows Walter’s 2024 expansion into the PCD tooling market with the introduction of Walter FMT, which focuses on lightweight machining—particularly for aluminium components. Engineers from Walter FMT’s facility in Trofa, Portugal, played a crucial role in training the U.S. team, ensuring a seamless startup and effective knowledge transfer for reconditioning operations.
Notably, the new PCD centre is housed within the PDQ Workholding facility—an established U.S. provider of custom workholding solutions that Walter acquired over a year ago. PDQ specializes in advanced clamping fixtures tailored for high-precision applications, making the Columbia City location a hub for integrated engineering and tool management services.
The facility will support both Walter and PDQ customers, reinforcing the company’s commitment to delivering holistic, cost-effective, and sustainable solutions across the machining value chain. With this investment, Walter strengthens its North American footprint and signals its long-term dedication to customer-centric innovation in cutting tool technology.
