In a powerful commemoration of World Earth Day 2025, Vedanta Aluminium showcased its commitment to sustainability with notable achievements in biodiversity conservation, waste-to-wealth initiatives, and renewable energy adoption. The company’s initiatives reflect its dedication to reducing its environmental footprint and fostering a more sustainable future while maintaining its position as a leader in industrial growth.
One of the key highlights of Vedanta’s sustainability achievements is its significant contribution to the waste-to-wealth initiative. Since 2022, the company has supplied over 1.5 million tonnes of fly ash to cement manufacturers and 3 million tonnes to National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) projects. The company has also supported Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) by providing 0.3 million tonnes of fly ash for brick production. In FY25 alone, Vedanta dispatched 223 rakes, utilizing fly ash at an impressive rate of 113%, showcasing its commitment to repurposing waste for productive uses and reducing environmental harm.
In line with its environmental goals, Vedanta Aluminium has partnered with PwC to undertake projects focused on biodiversity conservation and carbon footprint reduction. The company has been proactive in its efforts to combat climate change and safeguard natural resources, with initiatives like planting over 1 lakh saplings under the Matrivan program aimed at restoring biodiversity and enhancing green cover.
Vedanta’s sustainability efforts extend beyond waste management and reforestation. The company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GAIL to supply natural gas for its upcoming 430 KTPA cast house, a move that aligns with the company’s strategy to transition to cleaner energy sources. This investment in renewable energy solutions underscores Vedanta’s commitment to reducing its carbon emissions and creating a more sustainable industrial ecosystem.
Vedanta’s Earth Day celebrations also highlighted its strong focus on community engagement. In Odisha and Chhattisgarh, the company organized various awareness and involvement activities aimed at educating local communities on environmental conservation. At Goipeta village in Odisha, 145 people participated in campaigns, drawing competitions, and tree planting activities. The company planted over 15,000 seedlings, including 500 of the Chloroxylon swietenia species, and constructed 31 water harvesting structures that benefitted 250 farmers by providing access to 2.5 lakh cubic meters of water. Additionally, in Jharsuguda, Odisha, 170 students and teachers from OPMP Government Girls’ School participated in a plantation drive.
In Korba, Chhattisgarh, Vedanta’s subsidiary, BALCO, highlighted internal sustainability mechanisms through energy audits and behavioral change initiatives. As part of its environmental efforts, the company installed 417 solar lights, commissioned 11 solar-powered borewells, and planted over 10,000 saplings across various sites, including afforestation and Miyawaki forests.
Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, emphasized that Earth Day represents more than just a one-day observance for the company; it reflects Vedanta’s ongoing commitment to the environment. He stated, “At Vedanta Aluminium, Earth Day is not merely a single-day observance but a reflection of how we work every day with accountability to the environment and to future generations. Whether it’s the dispatch of our 650th fly ash rake, renewable interventions in mines, or restoring threatened species, our efforts are focused on closely aligning industrial growth with a greener, more sustainable outlook.”
Through its continued dedication to sustainability, Vedanta Aluminium is proving that industrial growth and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. The company’s proactive steps towards reducing waste, adopting renewable energy, and contributing to biodiversity make it a model for sustainable industrial practices.
