Vardhman Special Steels Limited (VSSL), a leading Indian producer of special and alloy steels, has approved the establishment of a new state-of-the-art steel forging unit in Punjab, marking a major step in the company’s growth and diversification strategy. The decision was cleared by the company’s Board of Directors and reflects VSSL’s intent to expand its value-added product portfolio while strengthening its position in domestic and global forging markets.

The proposed forging unit will serve high-growth sectors including automotive, engineering, railways, defence, and industrial equipment, where demand for high-quality forged components continues to rise. The facility will be equipped with advanced forging technology, modern heat treatment systems, and rigorous quality control processes, enabling compliance with stringent global standards.

With this investment, VSSL aims to integrate its core strength in special steel manufacturing with downstream forging capabilities. This vertical integration is expected to improve operational efficiency, enhance customer value, reduce dependence on external forging suppliers, and strengthen supply chain reliability. The project is also expected to generate substantial direct and indirect employment, contributing to regional economic development in Punjab.

Sustainability will be a key focus area for the new unit. VSSL has stated that the facility will be developed with strong emphasis on energy efficiency, environmental responsibility, and ESG-aligned manufacturing practices. The project will be implemented in phases, with commercial production commencing after completion of statutory approvals and execution milestones.

Commenting on the development, Sachit Jain, Chairman & Managing Director of Vardhman Special Steels Ltd, said that the company has been evaluating entry into the forgings segment in collaboration with Aichi Steel Corporation, which brings extensive forging expertise and advanced automotive technologies from Japan. He noted that improving market visibility, rising customer demand, and strong internal readiness have now aligned to move forward with a forging and machining unit in Ludhiana.

Mr Jain added that the foray into steel forgings is a natural extension of VSSL’s steelmaking operations and positions the company as a more integrated and strategic partner to automotive OEMs. The investment is expected to accelerate the company’s next phase of growth by expanding into higher value-added manufacturing segments.
