TRUMPF Opens Smart Factory in Farmington, Connecticut, and Announces Major Expansion and Workforce Initiatives!

Global technology leader TRUMPF has officially unveiled its new Smart Factory in Farmington, Connecticut, marking a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to advanced manufacturing and workforce development. The grand opening ceremony, which featured a speech by Dr. Nicola Leibinger-Kammüller, CEO of TRUMPF Group, celebrated the expansion of TRUMPF’s local production capabilities and the demonstration of its cutting-edge manufacturing technologies.

The 55,800 sq. ft. Smart Factory is equipped with TRUMPF’s state-of-the-art machines for cutting, bending, and welding sheet metal components, which are essential for the production of TRUMPF’s machines designed for the North American market. This new facility not only enhances production efficiency but also serves as a hub for demonstrations and training for manufacturers looking to evaluate and implement advanced production technologies within their own operations.

According to Burke Doar, Executive Vice-President of TRUMPF Inc., the Farmington Smart Factory represents a blueprint for North American manufacturers looking to reshore production while remaining cost-competitive. This initiative is crucial as companies seek to overcome challenges such as skilled labor shortages, supply chain disruptions, and the evolving demand for flexible, high-quality production. The Farmington facility will help companies enhance their manufacturing agility while adhering to strict safety standards.

TRUMPF has already partnered with manufacturers in North America to build over 300 Smart Factories of various sizes and configurations over the past few years, with expectations for continued growth in the trend. The opening of this new Smart Factory serves as a testament to TRUMPF’s ongoing commitment to advancing the manufacturing sector.

In addition to its manufacturing expansion, TRUMPF has committed to several new workforce development initiatives that will enhance the skill sets of the next generation of technicians and operators. These initiatives include:

  1. Increased Local Production: Starting in summer 2026, TRUMPF will add a new press brake production line to further expand the facility’s production capacity. This will enable the plant to cover all major sheet metal fabrication product lines and create additional jobs in the region.
  2. Training Centre Expansion: The TRUMPF Training Centre in Farmington will undergo significant expansion, incorporating the latest automation systems and real-world setups to better train future generations of manufacturing professionals. This relocation will increase the capacity of the center, which currently attracts 4,000 students annually from across the country.
  3. Broader Apprenticeship Program: TRUMPF has also launched a new apprenticeship consortium in collaboration with several Connecticut manufacturers, with support from AdvanceCT and the German-American Chamber of Commerce. This consortium will leverage TRUMPF’s extensive experience in apprenticeships and training programs, providing greater access to high-tech equipment, software, and skilled personnel, which will help elevate the workforce’s proficiency in advanced manufacturing technologies.

During the grand opening ceremony, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont highlighted the importance of TRUMPF’s investment in local manufacturing and skilled worker training. The state has provided $2.5 million in financial assistance to support TRUMPF’s expansion, marking the company as the first recipient of funding under the state’s Strategic Supply Chain Initiative. Governor Lamont emphasized that TRUMPF’s efforts will bolster Connecticut’s reputation as a leader in innovation and technology, while also strengthening the state’s manufacturing capabilities on the global stage.

TRUMPF’s investment in its Farmington Smart Factory and workforce development initiatives demonstrates its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and global competitiveness. With a focus on cutting-edge manufacturing technologies, advanced automation, and skilled labor development, the company is setting the stage for continued leadership in precision manufacturing in North America and beyond.

As TRUMPF expands its operations, it remains dedicated to providing the advanced technology solutions necessary for industries to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving manufacturing landscape, ensuring that companies are equipped to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future.
