Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited, along with its subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover, has begun operations at its new greenfield manufacturing plant in Panapakkam, Ranipet district, Tamil Nadu. The first vehicle to roll off the production line is the locally manufactured Range Rover Evoque, marking the formal start of manufacturing activities at the facility.

The plant was inaugurated by M. K. Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, in the presence of state ministers, senior government officials and leadership teams from the Tata Group and Jaguar Land Rover.

The Panapakkam plant represents the first phase of a broader development plan aimed at manufacturing next-generation vehicles for both Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Jaguar Land Rover. Future production plans include electric models, reinforcing the group’s focus on sustainable and future-ready mobility solutions.

During the inauguration ceremony, the Chief Minister highlighted that the investment further strengthens Tamil Nadu’s position as one of India’s leading automotive and manufacturing hubs. He noted that projects of this scale contribute to employment generation, innovation and industrial growth within the state.

N. Chandrasekaran described the facility as a significant milestone in the Tata Group’s efforts to expand advanced manufacturing capabilities in India. He emphasized that the project reflects the group’s long-standing partnership with Tamil Nadu and its commitment to building globally competitive, sustainable production ecosystems.

The new plant integrates advanced manufacturing systems with a skilled workforce recruited from across Tamil Nadu. A notable feature of the initiative is the inclusion of Tata Motors’ Lakshya programme, an earn-while-you-learn model designed to support technical career progression. Shopfloor technicians selected through a state-wide assessment of polytechnic graduates undergo intensive hands-on training, including exposure at Jaguar Land Rover facilities. Participants also have the opportunity to pursue company-sponsored engineering degrees while continuing employment, enabling career growth into engineering and management roles.

With the commencement of operations at Panapakkam, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Jaguar Land Rover expand their domestic manufacturing footprint while aligning production capacity with evolving consumer demand and the transition toward electrified mobility.
