Studer Achieves Global Growth and Innovation in 2024, Expands Market Share

Studer, the renowned Swiss manufacturer of high-precision cylindrical grinding machines, has strengthened its position in global markets during 2024, driving forward technological advancements and operational efficiencies. During a press conference held on March 27, 2024, from the Fritz Studer AG studio in Steffisburg, Jens Bleher, CEO of Studer since 2018, shared key insights into the company’s growth and strategic focus. The event was attended by international media representatives, including John Hunter, online editor for Machinery Market.

Bleher, who will transition to Chief Operating Officer (COO) of United Grinding Group on April 1, highlighted the diversified portfolio as a major factor behind Studer’s solid financial performance in 2024. Despite challenging economic conditions, Studer has maintained its competitiveness, emphasizing quality, cost management, and innovative technologies as key drivers for success.

Under the leadership of new CEO and chairman of the management board, Mr. Bottazzo, Studer has not only retained its market share globally but has expanded its footprint in several regions. Bottazzo noted significant progress in the universal cylindrical grinding machine market, where Studer is steadily consolidating its leadership position.

The company experienced robust growth in several industry sectors, particularly within the automotive and supplier industries in Asia, tool and die manufacturing, and the aerospace sector. Studer also saw an increase in the development of new customers, with a year-on-year rise to around 43%. However, markets in Central Europe, particularly Germany, did not meet expectations.

Studer’s customer care division reported a record performance in 2024, with strong results in spare parts, maintenance, and machine overhauls. The international service network, including multilingual and decentralized specialists, has been a key factor in maintaining high customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.

One of the standout performers for Studer in 2024 was the CNC universal cylindrical grinding machine segment. The S33 model, in particular, emerged as the best-seller, followed by the S31 and the favoritCNC. The premium S41 model also saw steady sales. In contrast, sales of production and conventional machines did not meet expectations.

Innovation continues to be at the heart of Studer’s success. Daniel Huber, Chief Technology Officer (CTO), emphasized the importance of developing cutting-edge grinding technologies. One of the key projects was the new generation of the favoritCNC, which now incorporates advanced Fanuc controls and a ‘Conventional Mode,’ offering customers an easy transition from conventional grinding machines to CNC. Additionally, the new universal W-axis for the S33 and S31 models offers automatic, operator-free grinding of varying workpiece lengths, enhancing precision and repeatability.

Studer also introduced several enhancements to its SmartJet coolant system and WireDress dressing process, further improving sustainability and efficiency in grinding operations. The company also completed the conversion of all its relevant CNC platforms to C.O.R.E., a modern architecture that enhances the capabilities of grinding and machine tools across the United Grinding Group.

On the operational front, COO Stephan Stoll reported significant progress in manufacturing and assembly, including the successful expansion of spindle production and optimization of internal assembly processes. Studer has also made strides in sustainability, with energy-efficient lighting and the implementation of advanced systems to reduce operational energy consumption.

Bleher concluded the conference by emphasizing the crucial role of well-trained and motivated employees in Studer’s continued success. With over 11% of the workforce involved in vocational training, Studer remains committed to nurturing the next generation of skilled professionals.

Studer’s continued success in 2024 reinforces its position as a leader in cylindrical grinding technology, combining cutting-edge innovation with operational excellence to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global market.
