STMicroelectronics Introduces Dual-Range Intelligent Motion Sensor to Power the Next Wave of Industrial IoT!

STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a global powerhouse in semiconductor innovation, has unveiled the ISM6HG256X—an advanced, dual-range intelligent motion sensor engineered to elevate performance, accuracy, and resilience in industrial IoT applications. This next-generation three-in-one IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) integrates low-g (±16g) and high-g (±256g) acceleration sensing along with a precision gyroscope, enabling devices to detect everything from fine vibrations to sudden shocks using a single compact component.

As industries accelerate their digital transformation, the demand for rugged, reliable, and high-resolution motion sensing is growing rapidly. Whether in robotics, industrial automation, predictive maintenance, asset monitoring, or worker safety systems, accurate motion data is essential for real-time decision-making. Traditionally, capturing both low- and high-g acceleration ranges required multiple sensors—leading to increased hardware complexity, higher energy consumption, and greater overall system cost. The ISM6HG256X addresses all these challenges with an integrated solution that simplifies design without compromising capability.

Simone Ferri, APMS Group Vice President and General Manager of the MEMS Sub-Group at STMicroelectronics, emphasized the importance of this innovation: “Conventional designs often require multiple sensors to capture different acceleration ranges, which increases cost, complexity, and power consumption. The ISM6HG256X solves this by combining all those capabilities in one smart device. Its ability to recognize and interpret motion, activity, and impact—directly within the sensor—enables faster decision-making, lower latency, and greater energy efficiency. This is an important step toward smarter, AI-driven industrial operations.”

A standout feature of the ISM6HG256X is its built-in edge AI capability. Equipped with a Machine Learning Core (MLC), Finite State Machine (FSM), Adaptive Self-Configuration (ASC), and Sensor Fusion Low Power (SFLP) technology, the sensor performs on-device processing, context awareness, and event detection without relying heavily on the cloud. This localized intelligence enhances security, reduces latency, and significantly cuts energy consumption—a major advantage for battery-powered IoT systems deployed in remote or demanding environments.

ST’s extensive in-house MEMS manufacturing experience, backed by more than 600 patents, ensures that the ISM6HG256X delivers best-in-class performance and reliability. The sensor is designed for continuous operation across both acceleration ranges while maintaining highly accurate angular tracking through its precision gyroscope. It offers exceptional resilience in harsh conditions, operating reliably between -40°C and 105°C, making it ideal for industrial settings where durability is paramount.

To support developers and accelerate system integration, ST has released the X-NUCLEO-IKS5A1 expansion board. Fully compatible with ST’s MEMS Studio and the X-CUBE-MEMS1 software libraries, this toolkit enables rapid prototyping and simplifies tasks such as sensor fusion, calibration, high-g/low-g processing, context detection, and asset tracking solutions.

Compact yet powerful, the ISM6HG256X comes in a 2.5mm x 3mm surface-mount package and is now available through ST’s eStore and authorized distributors. Pricing begins at $4.27 for orders of 1,000 units.

With its unique dual-range capability, edge AI intelligence, and rugged industrial-grade design, STMicroelectronics’ ISM6HG256X marks a significant step toward more adaptive, efficient, and scalable Industrial IoT solutions—empowering industries to build smarter, safer, and more responsive systems.
