In a major step toward deepening its global footprint, Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd (Sona Comstar) has announced a strategic joint venture with China’s Jinnaite Machinery Co Ltd (JNT), marking the company’s formal entry into the world’s largest and most competitive electric vehicle (EV) market. With an initial investment of USD 12 million (approximately ₹100 crore), Sona Comstar will hold a 60% majority stake in the newly formed entity. At the same time, JNT will contribute USD 8 million in assets and operational business value in the first phase of the collaboration.

Set to commence operations in the second half of FY26, the joint venture will manufacture and supply advanced driveline systems and components for both EV and non-EV applications, targeting leading automakers across China and other international markets. This move not only bolsters Sona Comstar’s manufacturing presence in Asia but also complements its established leadership in differential assemblies for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in North America and Europe.

“This manufacturing initiative in China is aligned with our strategy to grow across major Asian economies—India, China, Japan, and South Korea—while also strengthening our reach in the North American and European markets,” said the company in its official statement.

The strategic rationale behind the move is clear. China accounted for two-thirds of global EV sales in 2024, with local Chinese automakers contributing 76% of those numbers. For a global auto component manufacturer with aspirations to lead in the EV sector, a presence in China is no longer optional—it is imperative.

Vivek Vikram Singh, Managing Director and Group CEO of Sona Comstar, emphasized the transformative potential of this alliance: “This joint venture is a critical step in our strategy to grow within Asia’s fast-evolving markets. As the world’s largest EV market and a pioneer in EV technologies, China offers incredible opportunities for innovation and expansion.”

JNT brings to the table deep expertise in high-quality foundry operations, backed by patented technologies in casting and mould-making. The company is also a recognized contributor to national Chinese manufacturing standards, underscoring its industry credibility and local regulatory acumen. The synergy between Sona Comstar’s capabilities in precision forging, driveline engineering, and high-volume machining and JNT’s casting strengths creates a comprehensive and future-ready manufacturing setup.

The joint venture is not merely a strategic foothold—it is a fully operational growth engine. With a solid customer base, a healthy order book, and a clearly defined manufacturing roadmap, the venture is expected to serve as a launchpad for deeper penetration into China’s dynamic EV landscape and beyond.

As the global auto industry continues its transition toward electrification, Sona Comstar’s latest venture signals its readiness to be a key player in shaping the next era of sustainable mobility—one that is powered by innovation, global partnerships, and precision engineering.
