Safran, the French aerospace and defense giant, has announced plans to establish its first Research and Technology Centre outside of France, marking a significant expansion into the United Kingdom. This new development underscores Safran’s commitment to strengthening its presence in the UK, a relationship that stretches back 90 years.
This strategic move comes after Safran’s successful acquisition of actuation and flight control divisions from Collins Aerospace earlier this year. As a result, Safran has solidified its position as the third-largest civil aerospace entity in the UK, employing over 5,500 individuals across 14 locations, and generating an impressive £1.5 billion in annual revenue.
The new UK Research and Technology Centre aims to foster innovation across multiple facets of aerospace technology. Safran’s UK operations now cover a wide array of products and services for both civil and military aviation, including aircraft landing gear, seats, actuators, flight controls, nacelles, helicopter engines, and electrical equipment. The facilities encompass an integrated value chain, from cutting-edge research and design to manufacturing, maintenance, and MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) services.
Safran’s expansion into the UK aligns with its broader strategy of enhancing global research capabilities and diversifying its technological footprint. The establishment of this new centre not only reinforces the company’s current operations but also positions it to leverage the UK’s skilled workforce and advanced technological landscape.
As Safran continues to grow within the UK, it remains dedicated to innovation and excellence in aerospace manufacturing, ensuring its products and services meet the highest standards in the industry.
