Rolls-Royce, a key player in the defence sector, has announced a significant £400 million strategic partnership to bolster its submarine reactor production for the UK’s Royal Navy. This collaboration brings together industry leaders Assystem, AtkinsRéalis, and Frazer-Nash Consultancy to advance the AUKUS submarine reactor plans.
The newly established Capability Assured Strategic Partnership (CASP) enhances collaboration and leverages the unique nuclear expertise of each company involved. Rolls-Royce has a proven track record of powering the Royal Navy’s nuclear submarines for over 65 years, and this new partnership is set to strengthen its capabilities further.
This alliance marks one of the largest single supply chain contracts in the history of Rolls-Royce Submarines, reflecting a strong commitment to the UK’s Defence Nuclear Enterprise. With a focus on advanced nuclear technologies, the partnership aims to meet the increasing demands of the Ministry of Defence.
In March 2023, it was confirmed that Rolls-Royce Submarines would supply nuclear reactor plants for new attack submarines under the historic tri-lateral agreement between Australia, the UK, and the United States. To support both UK and Australian defence programmes, Rolls-Royce plans to double the size of its Raynesway site in Derby. This expansion will create over 1,000 skilled roles in areas such as manufacturing and engineering, as well as additional positions within the supply chain.
Rolls-Royce’s strategic advancement aligns with the broader Defence Industrial Strategy, underpinning its long-term commitment to delivering comprehensive engineering and professional services to meet the growing defence needs.
