Rolls-Royce has announced the introduction of the enhanced Trent XWB-84 Enhanced Performance (EP) engine, marking a significant step forward in delivering a new era of efficiency, sustainability, and profitability for airline customers around the globe.
The Trent XWB-84 is already recognized as the world’s most efficient large aero engine, designed specifically for the Airbus A350. Together, the engine and aircraft set the benchmark in long-haul travel, offering unmatched fuel efficiency, exceptional durability, and proven versatility across the world’s longest commercial routes.
Building on this foundation, the Trent XWB-84 EP incorporates a suite of advanced enhancements aimed at further improving the engine’s industry-leading performance. The upgraded model delivers at least a 1% reduction in fuel consumption compared to its predecessor. This translates into average annual fleet fuel savings of approximately $5 million, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions and contributing to quieter operations—by up to two decibels—without compromising the engine’s outstanding durability.
Engineered for the future, the Trent XWB-84 EP is certified to operate with up to 50% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), with full compatibility for 100% SAF already in sight. These upgrades ensure the engine is aligned with the aviation industry’s drive toward net-zero emissions, while offering immediate operational and environmental benefits.
To guarantee the continued reliability and robustness that operators expect from the Trent XWB family, Rolls-Royce undertook one of the most rigorous development and certification programmes in its history. The enhanced engine underwent thousands of hours of testing across eight development engines and three flight test engines. These tests, both on the ground and in flight, exceeded performance expectations and culminated in certification being achieved in December 2024.
Chris Cholerton, President – Civil Aerospace at Rolls-Royce, commented: “The Trent XWB-84 EP reflects our unwavering commitment to delivering the most advanced propulsion solutions. This latest enhancement not only supports the operational goals of our customers but also helps them move closer to their sustainability targets.”
The Trent XWB-84 EP is now poised to redefine industry standards once again—bringing lower emissions, greater efficiency, and enhanced operational performance to the skies.
