In a major advancement for military logistics and field maintenance, the Republic of Korea Marine Corps Logistics Group has become the first military branch globally to deploy a robot-based mobile metal 3D printer, dramatically enhancing its ability to repair and manufacture critical parts for equipment such as the amphibious assault armoured vehicle (KAAV).
The technology, developed by Meltio and implemented in Korea through a strategic collaboration with AM Solutions, uses Laser Wire Directed Energy Deposition (LW-DED) — a cutting-edge metal additive manufacturing (AM) process that offers precise, low-waste production of components using various metals, including stainless steel, titanium, copper, and Inconel.
This milestone follows the certification of Meltio’s wire-laser metal 3D printing technology by several global defense forces, including the US Navy, French Navy, Spanish Army and Air Force, and now the Army of the Republic of Korea.
Lieutenant Colonel Kim Seong-nam, commander of the Republic of Korea Marine Corps maintenance battalion, emphasized the significance: “The introduction of metal 3D printers is significant not only for reducing operation and maintenance costs, but also for preventing delays in maintenance schedules due to limited procurement of repair parts.”
The container-type mobile system introduced on February 19 can be transported via crane or forklift, enabling forward-deployed units to quickly respond to equipment breakdowns by fabricating hard-to-source or discontinued parts on-site.
The Meltio metal 3D printer system features the Meltio Integration Kit for Industrial Robots, enabling integration with major robotic arms from ABB, Kuka, Fanuc, and Yaskawa. The flexible platform eliminates the size constraints of traditional printers and enables large-scale printing, repair, and cladding — even while in motion.
“Thanks to collaboration agreements with key partners like AM Solutions, we’re helping the Korean Army gain full autonomy over metal part production,” said Adam Hourigan, Meltio’s APAC Sales Manager. “The defence sector is a strategic priority for us, and Korea is now a leader in adopting this innovative capability.”
“This marks a significant milestone in Korea’s local manufacturing innovation,” said Daejung Kim, CEO of AM Solutions. “It’s not just about defence — our goal is to expand these solutions into broader sectors that demand advanced manufacturing capabilities.”
The system’s efficiency, mobility, and ability to reduce logistical dependency promise a new era in how modern militaries sustain their combat readiness and reduce operational downtime — making it a transformative step for defence logistics worldwide.
