SAIL Supplies Steel for Construction of the World’s Tallest Railway Bridge Over Chenab River!

Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has made a significant contribution to the construction of the world’s tallest railway bridge, which spans the Chenab River in Jammu & Kashmir. The company delivered a total of 16,000 tonnes of steel for the bridge’s construction, with SAIL’s Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) supplying 12,000 tonnes, marking a proud achievement for the steelmaker and its plants.

This monumental bridge, which is 1.3 kilometers long, is designed to withstand extreme environmental conditions, including wind speeds up to 266 km/h and the most powerful earthquake forces. Standing 35 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower, it will serve as a vital part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link project, playing a crucial role in connecting the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India by rail.

A senior official from the Bhilai Steel Plant highlighted the importance of this contribution, stating, “Bhilai Steel Plant, along with other SAIL plants, has supplied 16,000 tonnes of steel for this remarkable project, including plates, TMT bars, and structural steel. This is a proud achievement for SAIL and BSP.”

The steel supplied by SAIL included 6,690 tonnes of TMT (Thermo-Mechanically Treated) products, 1,793 tonnes of structural steel, and 7,511 tonnes of steel plates, hot strip mill products, and chequered plates. Of this, the Bhilai Steel Plant provided 12,432 tonnes, including 5,922 tonnes of TMT steel, 6,454 tonnes of plates, and 56 tonnes of structural steel. The remaining steel was supplied by SAIL’s other plants, including IISCO Steel Plant at Burnpur, Durgapur Steel Plant, Rourkela Steel Plant, and Bokaro Steel Ltd.

On the same day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first train service to the Kashmir Valley and launched several other development projects, including the groundbreaking world’s tallest railway bridge. This infrastructure project is a testament to India’s growing capabilities in building high-quality, large-scale infrastructure that is set to transform the nation’s connectivity.

SAIL’s role in the project further underscores the company’s pivotal contribution to India’s industrial growth. As one of the country’s largest steel producers, SAIL is a leader in supplying steel for various sectors, including infrastructure, construction, railways, defense, and the automotive industries. The success of this project highlights SAIL’s dedication to innovation, quality, and its strategic importance in national development initiatives.
