Preco Unveiled Stinger Laser Scan-Head for FireFly Cross Web System!

Preco unveiled Stinger, a modular laser scan-head option for its FireFly cross web systems, enabling machine-direction applications such as micro-perforation without compromising performance. Announced on January 28, 2026, from Somerset, Wisconsin, the new scan-head was positioned as a cost-effective way for manufacturers to achieve two-machine capability on a single platform.

Stinger was designed as an add-on for new FireFly systems and slid into position beneath the primary scan head, locking securely in place. This configuration eliminated the need for additional storage, manual head swap-outs, or complex setup procedures. With Stinger installed, manufacturers were able to switch seamlessly between cross-web and web-direction applications on the same system while maintaining speed, quality, and process control.

According to Preco, the Stinger solution combined the flexibility of the FireFly platform with the web-direction precision traditionally associated with its BeeLine™ systems. The company stated that this approach allowed individual applications to run as effectively as on dedicated machines, while significantly reducing overall equipment cost.

The system supported precision micro-perforation with consistent hole sizes ranging from 50 to 150 microns, depending on material. It also delivered improved power stability, ensuring consistent scoring during web speed ramp-up and ramp-down. Fast changeovers were enabled through a slide-in, lock-in design, and the solution supported cross-web and web-direction scoring, micro- and macro-perforation, and window cutting without trade-offs in quality.

Jake Brunsberg, CEO of Preco, said the Stinger offering provided customers with a no-compromise solution that delivered the performance of multiple dedicated machines in a single system, helping lower total cost of ownership while expanding production flexibility.

Preco designs and manufactures industrial laser, rotary, and die-cutting solutions, offering both equipment and contract manufacturing services for applications including web handling, converting, packaging, laser welding, cladding, and heat treating.
