Mobis India has officially opened its electric vehicle (EV) battery system assembly plant in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, marking a significant step in the country’s push towards electric mobility. The new facility, strategically located next to Hyundai’s manufacturing plant, spans 8.15 acres and is designed to advance EV battery manufacturing capabilities in India.
The facility’s initial installed capacity stands at 36,000 units per annum, with plans for scaling up to 75,000 units in the short term. This capacity expansion will help meet the growing demand for high-performance battery systems used in electric vehicles. The plant will primarily focus on assembling battery systems for locally manufactured EVs, with the Hyundai CRETA Electric set to be the first vehicle equipped with the battery packs produced at the facility.
This project aligns with India’s ambitious goals to lead the way in the electric vehicle market. According to TRB Rajaa, the Industries Minister of Tamil Nadu, the new facility will play a key role in strengthening the state’s localisation capabilities for critical EV components. The project not only boosts the region’s manufacturing ecosystem but also supports the transition to smart manufacturing. The establishment of this facility is a significant leap forward for Tamil Nadu, which has long been a hub for the country’s automotive industry.
The plant is expected to generate 255 direct and indirect job opportunities, providing a significant boost to the local economy. The facility’s high-tech operations will contribute to the state’s growing reputation as a leader in high-value manufacturing, particularly in the electric vehicle sector.
In line with global sustainability trends, the Mobis India EV battery plant is built on eco-friendly principles, using fully automated assembly lines to minimize environmental impact. The plant currently produces NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) battery packs, and there are plans to include lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery production in the near future. This shift will further diversify the types of batteries produced at the facility, expanding options for EV manufacturers in India.
The inauguration of Mobis India’s EV battery plant is a pivotal moment in India’s transition to electric mobility. It strengthens the local manufacturing ecosystem and supports the government’s push for sustainability and smart manufacturing. With its advanced, eco-friendly manufacturing processes, the plant will play a crucial role in the country’s growing electric vehicle industry, supporting both domestic EV production and India’s ambition to become a major player in the global EV market.
