Mercedes-Benz India has marked a significant achievement with the production of its 200,000th locally assembled vehicle at its state-of-the-art Chakan plant near Pune. The milestone vehicle, a fully electric EQS SUV, was unveiled during a special ceremony attended by Dr. Jörg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management at Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Santosh Iyer, Managing Director & CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, and Vyankatesh Kulkarni, Executive Director & Head of Operations.
This landmark achievement highlights the rapid growth and success Mercedes-Benz India has experienced since it began assembling cars locally in 1995. The company had produced just 50,000 cars in the first 19 years of operation (1995–2014), but it has since scaled up production exponentially. In the last decade alone, Mercedes-Benz India has assembled an additional 150,000 vehicles, with 50,000 units produced in just the past two years. This rapid increase in production reflects the rising demand for luxury vehicles in India, particularly for the Mercedes-Benz brand, which continues to be the market leader in the luxury car segment.
The Chakan plant has been a pivotal factor in this growth. Not only was it the first location outside of Germany to locally build the Mercedes-Maybach S500 in 2015, but it also took the lead in India’s luxury electric vehicle segment. In 2022, the plant began the local production of the EQS 580 sedan, and shortly thereafter, it became the first manufacturer in India to locally assemble a second battery electric vehicle—the EQS SUV. With a focus on sustainability, the Chakan facility has been running entirely on renewable energy since 2022, reinforcing the brand’s dedication to eco-friendly manufacturing practices.
As of today, the plant produces a diverse lineup of locally assembled models, including the A-Class, C-Class, E-Class LWB, S-Class, and the Mercedes-Maybach S580. Alongside these, the plant also assembles luxury electric vehicles such as the EQS 580 sedan and EQS SUV, making Mercedes-Benz India the only luxury carmaker in the country to locally produce two BEVs. The success of these electric models highlights the growing interest and acceptance of electric vehicles in India, with the company leading the charge in the luxury EV market.
In 2024, Mercedes-Benz India achieved a new all-time high in sales, with 19,565 units sold, reinforcing its position as the top luxury carmaker in India for the tenth consecutive year. This robust sales performance further cements Mercedes-Benz’s dominance in the Indian market and reflects the increasing consumer preference for high-end luxury vehicles.
Looking ahead, Mercedes-Benz India’s strategy is focused on expanding its customer base and continuing to provide the highest level of service and satisfaction. With over 100 outlets spread across 50 cities, the company boasts the largest network of luxury car dealerships in India. Mercedes-Benz India’s ‘Made in India, for India’ approach allows it to tailor its vehicles to meet local preferences while maintaining the global quality standards the brand is known for.
As Mercedes-Benz India continues to scale its production and enhance its portfolio, it remains committed to driving innovation in the luxury car sector and playing a key role in shaping India’s automotive future, particularly in the growing electric vehicle segment. The company’s vision for 2025 is clear: to expand its service reach, launch new products, and continue contributing to the development of India’s luxury automotive market.
