Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd has announced a significant expansion of its Advanced Research and Development Centre at Mahindra Research Valley (MRV) in Chennai. The project, supported by an investment of approximately ₹196 crore, will introduce new engineering and testing facilities to accelerate the development of next-generation vehicle technologies.

The expansion is aimed at strengthening Mahindra’s capabilities in vehicle design, product engineering and validation across passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and farm equipment platforms. The upgraded infrastructure is expected to become operational within the year and is projected to generate nearly 2,000 additional engineering and technical jobs. MRV currently employs more than 5,000 professionals at its 125-acre campus.

Government of Tamil Nadu leadership, including Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and Industries Minister T. R. B. Rajaa, attended the foundation ceremony, highlighting the project’s strategic importance to the state’s automotive ecosystem. Company representatives noted that the investment reinforces Chennai’s role as a major automotive research hub while supporting India’s broader manufacturing and innovation goals.

Established in 2012, Mahindra Research Valley serves as the group’s global R&D hub for automotive and farm machinery technologies. Engineers at MRV focus on advanced mobility systems, vehicle architecture, powertrain development and patent generation, collaborating with global teams to deliver innovative solutions.

The campus, inaugurated in 2012 by former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, is considered a centrepiece of Mahindra’s engineering ecosystem. With one of the highest numbers of patents and design registrations in the country, MRV plays a central role in shaping the company’s technology roadmap.

Founded in 1945, the Mahindra Group operates in more than 100 countries and employs over 324,000 people worldwide. The group holds leading positions in sectors including farm equipment, utility vehicles, information technology and financial services, and is recognized as the world’s largest tractor manufacturer by volume.

With the MRV expansion, Mahindra aims to enhance its innovation capabilities, strengthen domestic R&D capacity and accelerate the development of advanced, globally competitive vehicle platforms.
