LK Metrology Surface Roughness Probe Enhances Component Inspection!

LK Metrology has unveiled the Surfacers SRP, a next-generation high-resolution surface roughness probe that transforms the way manufacturers approach component inspection. Designed for seamless integration within CNC measuring cycles on coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), the SRP delivers exceptional precision and efficiency by combining dimensional and surface roughness measurements in a single setup.

The Surfacers SRP is a plug-and-play probe capable of measuring surface variations with a 1-micron resolution. Unlike traditional methods that require transferring parts to separate surface-measuring instruments, the SRP enables users to inspect fine-scale surface imperfections—such as peaks and valleys—directly within the CMM environment. This approach eliminates secondary inspections, reduces handling time, and improves overall process accuracy and repeatability.

Engineered for ease of use and versatility, the probe comes with dedicated application software that allows quick setup without the need for third-party integration. It fits any CMM equipped with an industry-standard probe head, making it an accessible upgrade for manufacturers looking to enhance inspection capabilities without major equipment changes.

The SRP’s mounting compatibility with automatic change racks allows for automated sensor switching, improving operational efficiency in multi-sensor environments. This flexibility enables smooth transitions between tactile probes, laser scanners, and the roughness probe—making it ideal for smart, automated manufacturing lines.

At the heart of the system is a precision-engineered body that holds three interchangeable, skidded stainless-steel probe modules. Each module serves a specific purpose: one for flat, conical, and cylindrical surfaces; another for concave, convex, and spherical geometries; and a third designed for grooves and steps. This modularity provides wide-ranging capability across different component geometries and materials.

During operation, the CMM positions the stylus in contact with the surface, while the probe’s internal mechanism moves it smoothly across the area being measured. The probe communicates wirelessly with the CMM’s computer using Bluetooth 4.0, allowing for fast and reliable data transfer without additional cabling. The skid mechanism acts as a stable reference line, ensuring the stylus captures even the smallest surface irregularities with remarkable accuracy.

Adding to its precision, the SRP incorporates an integrated preload mechanism that isolates the stylus from external vibrations or CMM movement, guaranteeing consistent results. The stylus tip, with a radius of just 5 microns, exerts minimal force on the surface—preventing deformation while maintaining sensitivity. The system measures surface roughness within a 0.5 to 6.5 Ra range, covering most industrial inspection needs.

According to Dave Robinson, Marketing Manager at LK Metrology, “By integrating surface roughness measurement directly onto the CMM, we are providing manufacturers with a powerful tool to streamline their inspection processes, reduce costs and improve product quality.”

The Surfacers SRP represents a significant step forward in metrology, empowering manufacturers in aerospace, automotive, and precision engineering sectors to achieve faster, smarter, and more reliable inspection results—all within a single measurement platform.
