Kyocera MA90 Milling Series Delivers Higher Rigidity and Tool Life with 4-Edge Tangential Insert Design!
Kyocera has introduced its MA90 milling series, featuring a robust esign built around 4-edge tangentially mounted inserts that significantly enhance rigidity, chip evacuation, tool life, and surface finish quality. The series is engineered to meet the demands of modern milling operations where stability, productivity, and ease of use are critical.
A defining feature of the MA90 milling cutters is the tangential insert mounting, in which the insert screw is positioned on the side rather than the front. This configuration directs cutting forces into the corner of the insert pocket, allowing the tool body to absorb loads more effectively. In conventional milling cutters with front-mounted screws, cutting forces tend to act across the insert edge, creating tension on the screw and limiting rigidity. Kyocera’s tangential design minimizes this issue, resulting in a stronger, more stable cutter capable of handling higher loads and more aggressive cutting conditions.
The tangential layout also enables more cutting edges per diameter, improving productivity while maintaining tool stability. Additionally, the design supports a larger core (web) thickness, which further strengthens the cutter body. Improved chip evacuation is another benefit, as the insert orientation and flute geometry help chips clear efficiently from the cutting zone, reducing heat buildup and lowering the risk of chip recutting.
The MA90 milling series is available in a wide range of inch and metric configurations, including end mills, face mills, and modular head systems. This flexibility allows manufacturers to deploy the same cutting concept across multiple applications and machine platforms, simplifying tooling strategies and inventory management.
When paired with Kyocera’s PR18 Series inserts, the MA90 cutters are capable of machining a broad spectrum of materials. The PR18 insert grades feature Kyocera’s proprietary MEGACOAT NANO EX coating technology, which uses a unique double-lamination structure with nano-scale multilayers. This advanced coating provides exceptional resistance to abrasion, wear, and heat, outperforming conventional coatings in demanding milling operations. As a result, tool life is extended, cutting performance remains consistent, and downtime associated with insert changes is reduced.
By combining a rigid tangential insert design with advanced coating technology, the MA90 milling series offers manufacturers a reliable solution for achieving higher productivity, improved surface finishes, and longer tool life. The system is particularly well suited for shops looking to push cutting parameters while maintaining process stability and predictable performance across a wide range of milling applications.
