Jindal Steel Plans Major Expansion of Structural Steel Capacity at Raigarh!

Saturday 3 January 2026, 4:29:39 PM

Jindal Steel has announced plans to significantly expand its structural steel manufacturing capacity at its Raigarh plant in Chhattisgarh, doubling output from 1.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 2.4 MTPA by mid-2028. The expansion is aimed at strengthening domestic availability of heavy and ultra-heavy structural steel sections and reinforcing the company’s leadership position in India’s growing structural steel market.

As part of the project, Jindal Steel will establish a new dedicated structural steel mill at Raigarh, along with comprehensive upgrades across upstream and downstream facilities. This investment is intended to enhance the company’s ability to serve large-scale infrastructure and industrial projects that require complex, high-load-bearing steel sections with tight execution timelines.

Currently, the Raigarh facility manufactures parallel flange structural sections ranging from 100 mm to 900 mm in depth, with weights of up to 333 kg per metre. Following the expansion, the plant will be capable of producing much larger and heavier sections—up to 1,100 mm in depth and as heavy as 1,500 kg per metre—placing them among the largest structural steel sections produced domestically in India.

These enhanced capabilities are expected to directly support rising demand from sectors such as transport and urban infrastructure, power generation, refineries, renewable energy projects, transmission networks, and high-rise construction. By expanding domestic capacity for ultra-heavy sections, the project will also help reduce India’s reliance on imported structural steel for complex and large-scale developments.

Commenting on the expansion, Subrat Panda, Head – Structures & CSB at Jindal Steel, said the initiative is focused on building long-term domestic capability for complex infrastructure and energy projects. He noted that increasing the availability of high-strength structural steel within India will help improve execution timelines, optimise material usage, and support more efficient and sustainable construction practices.

Through this expansion, Jindal Steel continues to promote the wider adoption of advanced structural steel solutions, aligning its manufacturing strategy with India’s infrastructure growth ambitions and the increasing emphasis on durability, speed of construction, and sustainability in large engineering projects.
