Iconic Scottish Stones Take Center Stage at Winter Olympics

Kays Scotland, a historic manufacturer based in Mauchline, Ayrshire, is proudly supplying curling stones for the upcoming Milano Cortina Winter Olympics. Each stone, crafted from the unique granite of Ailsa Craig, exemplifies the firm’s rich heritage and dedication to quality.

Located off the South Ayrshire coast, Ailsa Craig is more than just an island; it is the birthplace of the Olympic-standard curling stones. The process begins with the extraction of two types of granite from the island: blue hone from the north and green granite from the south. These materials are combined and undergo a meticulous six to seven-hour transformation from what are colloquially known as ‘cheeses’ due to their wheel-like appearance into finely polished curling stones.

Kays Scotland, established in 1851, has a legacy spanning over 175 years in the industry. Their stones have been a staple at the Winter Olympic Games, dating back to the inaugural event in Chamonix in 1924, with only the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics as an exception. For the upcoming games, the company has supplied 132 stones, ensuring competitors have the finest quality equipment.

This craftsmanship highlights Scotland’s significant contribution to the sport and reinforces the global reputation of Kays Scotland as a leader in curling stone manufacturing.
