A new chapter in British automotive history is being written as Morris Commercial Ltd announces the revival of the iconic Morris J-Type van. The modern electric variant, the Morris JE, will be manufactured at a state-of-the-art facility in Bro Tathan, Vale of Glamorgan. This factory marks Wales’ first dedicated electric vehicle manufacturing plant and is set to create 150 jobs.
Originally launched in 1949, the Morris J-Type van was a trailblazer in the light commercial vehicle sector. Known for its forward-control design, more than 150,000 units were produced, including the near-identical Austin 101 model. Its distinctive “Post Office red” color became synonymous with British roads during the 1950s and 60s, thanks to large Royal Mail and BT fleets. The vehicle was celebrated for its reliability, ready availability of parts, and timeless appeal.
The new Morris JE promises to combine the classic aesthetic of its predecessor with cutting-edge electric technology. This fusion of tradition and innovation represents a significant investment in Britain’s automotive industry, reinforcing the country’s manufacturing capabilities and commitment to sustainable transport solutions.
The company aims to blend historical legacy with modern engineering, offering a vehicle that appeals to businesses and collectors alike. Morris Commercial Ltd’s decision to base production in Wales underscores the region’s growing reputation as a hub for electric vehicle innovation.
As production commences, the Morris JE is expected to draw interest both domestically and internationally, further cementing the iconic status of the Morris brand.
