Harnessing the Sun: UltraTech’s Innovative Solar Power Project at Awarpur Cement Works

UltraTech’s Awarpur Cement Works has recently implemented a groundbreaking solar power project by installing Floating Solar Photovoltaic panels (FSPVs) in two water reservoirs within the unit premises.

Covering a vast area of 3600 square meters, the solar project boasts a DC capacity of 4.096 MWp (3.30 MW AC) and comprises approximately 7600 solar panels. This initiative is estimated to generate an impressive 6,173 MWh of solar energy annually, leading to a reduction of around 6000 MT of CO2 emissions per year, equivalent to the environmental benefits of 2.7 lakh matured trees.

Under the Captive mode, UltraTech will utilize 100% of the power generated by the solar power plant. The water reservoirs, initially created as part of the unit’s water harvesting efforts, have a total capacity of 1,10,000 cubic meters of water. Placing solar panels on these reservoirs not only generates energy but also helps in reducing water loss due to evaporation by up to approximately 70%.

The project is designed with a focus on minimizing its impact on local ecosystems. It contributes to maintaining water quality and regulating temperature through shading, which aids in reducing the rapid growth of algae populations. Additionally, this innovative approach optimizes land usage, addressing the challenge of land availability for solar panel deployment.

Energy Transition at UltraTech: As part of its RE100 commitment, UltraTech aims to meet 100% of its electricity requirement through renewable sources by 2050. Furthermore, as a member of EP100, UltraTech is committed to doubling its energy productivity.

By 2030, UltraTech plans to increase the overall share of green energy in its total energy mix to 85%. As an interim target, the company aims to raise its total green energy share threefold from the current 22% to 60% by FY26. To achieve this, UltraTech has implemented various initiatives, including the adoption of renewable energy sources and the expansion of Waste Heat Recovery Systems (WHRS).

Currently, UltraTech boasts a green energy capacity of 719 MW, comprising 264 MW of WHRS installed capacity and 455 MW of contracted renewable energy, translating to 24% of its current energy requirements.
