General Motors and Samsung SDI of South Korea have announced plans to invest more than $3 billion in a new electric vehicle battery cell production in the United States.
They did not specify the location of the new factory, which is anticipated to begin operations in 2026, according to a joint statement from GM and Samsung SDI. The factory, which is planned to produce nickel-rich prismatic and cylindrical cells, will be operated jointly by GM and Samsung SDI. Thousands of jobs are likely to be created, according to the companies.
This is General Motors’ fourth joint venture battery cell facility. It has announced three further collaborations with LG Energy Solution of South Korea. A 900-person facility near Warren, Ohio, has begun cell production, and operations in Spring Hill, Tennessee, and Lansing, Michigan, are in the planning stages.
