Fives has secured a contract with Nucor Tubular Products, a leading manufacturer of carbon steel pipe and tubing, to design and supply Abbey cutoff machines for two of Nucor’s plants in the United States. The Marseilles, Illinois and Decatur, Alabama facilities will each receive a new, state-of-the-art cutoff machine as part of Nucor’s strategic expansion efforts.
The cutoff machine for the Marseilles plant will play a key role in Nucor’s expansion plan to produce larger tube sizes intended for the structural market. This machine will provide both plunge and orbital cutting of tubes up to 16 inches in diameter. With its advanced cutting capabilities, it will allow the facility to meet the growing demand for larger, high-precision tubes that are required in various structural applications.
Meanwhile, the Decatur facility’s machine will be used for cutting tubes up to 20 inches in diameter, contributing to the expansion of the plant’s existing tube mill operations. Both machines are designed to cut tubes with wall thicknesses up to 0.625 inches, at cutting speeds of up to 200 feet per minute (FPM), ensuring high-efficiency production while maintaining precision.
The Abbey cutoff machines are specifically engineered to handle the challenges of cutting larger and thicker tubes, offering reliable performance and precision for high-volume production. Their ability to handle demanding tube sizes and thicknesses with speed and accuracy will significantly enhance the overall productivity of the Nucor Tubular Products plants. This will not only support Nucor’s growth into new markets but also improve their ability to meet the specific needs of their customers in industries requiring structural pipes and tubing.
By choosing Fives to supply this advanced machinery, Nucor Tubular Products is reinforcing its commitment to growth and innovation in the steel pipe manufacturing sector. The new machines are expected to enhance the company’s competitive edge by improving both production capabilities and the quality of their end products. With these additions, Nucor is well-positioned to meet the increasing demand for high-quality steel tubes in large sizes, supporting infrastructure projects and other applications in the structural market.
In summary, the partnership between Fives and Nucor Tubular Products will deliver advanced Abbey cutoff machines to Nucor’s facilities in Marseilles and Decatur, enhancing production capacity and efficiency as part of Nucor’s expansion into larger tube sizes. The new machines will ensure that Nucor remains at the forefront of high-quality carbon steel pipe manufacturing, capable of meeting the evolving demands of the structural market.
