ABB entered into an agreement with Fervo Energy to supply advanced motor control and electrification solutions for the Cape Station geothermal project in southwest Utah, USA. The collaboration brought together ABB’s expertise in electrification and motion technologies with Fervo Energy’s enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) capabilities to strengthen grid resilience and support the growing demand for reliable, carbon-free domestic energy.

Cape Station was positioned as the world’s largest next-generation geothermal development by installed capacity. The project was scheduled to begin delivering clean, baseload power to the grid in 2026, marking a significant milestone for sustainable energy generation in the United States.

As part of the project, Fervo Energy planned to deploy advanced horizontal drilling techniques in geothermal reservoirs, enabling multiple wells to be drilled from a single well pad. This approach reduced surface footprint, minimized drilling risks, and unlocked access to previously unreachable geothermal resources. The development roadmap outlined initial power delivery by late 2026, with plans to add around 100 MW by early 2027 and scale up to approximately 500 MW in later phases—enough to supply electricity to about 355,000 U.S. homes annually.

Under the agreement, ABB was set to deliver a comprehensive package of medium-voltage motor control equipment, including more than 80 drives to manage critical high-horsepower operations. ABB’s scope also covered medium-voltage motors and generators, low-voltage motor control centers, medium-voltage switchgear, and prefabricated eHouses to house well-pad drive systems and associated electrical infrastructure.

Tim Latimer, CEO and co-founder of Fervo Energy, stated that ABB’s proven track record in delivering reliable, high-performance electrification and motor control solutions for critical energy projects made it the preferred partner for Cape Station. He highlighted ABB’s ability to advise, develop, and execute at scale as a key factor in the selection.

Brandon Spencer, President of ABB Motion, noted that the partnership reinforced ABB’s commitment to expanding the potential of renewable and reliable energy sources using proven electrification technologies. He added that Cape Station represented a major step toward a more sustainable energy future, with geothermal power playing an increasingly important role in clean, firm energy generation.
