Expanded Cutting Tool Series Optimized for Stainless Steel Machining

Tungaloy Corporation has strengthened its DoFeedTri series with an expansion specifically engineered for the unique challenges of stainless steel machining. Known for its demanding cutting conditions and high material toughness, stainless steel has long been one of the most difficult materials to process efficiently. The newly introduced grade, combined with enhanced chipbreaker designs and an extended cutter body lineup, marks a significant advancement in cutting tool technology, offering manufacturers greater productivity, durability, and flexibility.

Stainless steel, while widely used across industries such as aerospace, automotive, medical, and general engineering, is notoriously tough on tools. Its work-hardening tendency and poor thermal conductivity often lead to rapid tool wear, excessive heat generation, and unstable machining conditions. Tungaloy’s new developments directly target these challenges by enhancing wear resistance, optimizing chip control, and minimizing vibration during operations.

At the heart of this expansion is the AH130 grade, designed to deliver outstanding wear and fracture resistance when cutting stainless steels. This new grade ensures longer tool life even under aggressive machining conditions, giving manufacturers more consistent performance and reducing the frequency of tool changes. For production lines where efficiency and reliability are paramount, the AH130 grade provides a clear advantage.

Alongside the new grade, Tungaloy has introduced innovative low cutting force chipbreakers. These chipbreakers reduce the cutting load, which not only lessens tool stress but also contributes to better surface finish and stability. The reverse-positive land geometry strengthens the cutting edge and minimizes the risk of chipping, a common issue in stainless steel machining. By combining reduced cutting forces with robust edge geometry, these inserts maintain high machining stability while ensuring cost-effective performance.

The design of the DoFeedTri inserts continues to be one of the most compelling features of the series. With a double-sided, six-corner configuration, each insert maximizes usable edges, allowing for more cutting action per insert and significantly improving cost efficiency. The 12-degree entry angle directs cutting forces toward the tool axis, reducing vibration during heavy cuts. This feature is especially valuable for high-feed milling operations, where stability directly impacts machining accuracy and tool life.

In addition, the inserts are optimized for ramping operations, supporting inclined cutting angles with enhanced chip evacuation. The wide inner cutting edge enables a three-degree ramping angle with the ø16 size, making the system highly effective for applications requiring flexibility in approach and machining strategies.

To further broaden application possibilities, Tungaloy has expanded the DoFeedTri cutter body lineup. The new range covers under-shank types, modular cutters, and bore-type cutters, ensuring compatibility with a wide variety of machine tools and machining setups. This expanded lineup allows manufacturers to fine-tune their tooling solutions to match specific production environments, delivering greater freedom in process optimization.

With the combination of a high-rigidity cutter design, advanced insert technology, and an expanded tooling lineup, the DoFeedTri series now represents a comprehensive solution for manufacturers tackling stainless steel. The enhancements not only address the persistent problems of wear, vibration, and chip control but also unlock new levels of productivity and cost efficiency.
