Birla Global University successfully hosted the International Conference on Grassroots and Frugal Innovations in Emerging Economies (GFI 2026) from March 12 to 14 at its campus in Bhubaneswar, bringing together a global community of academicians, policymakers, entrepreneurs and innovators. The conference focused on addressing sustainable development challenges through locally driven, cost-effective and scalable innovation models.

Organised by the Birla Hub for Innovation, Venturing and Entrepreneurship (B-Hive) under the Birla School of Management, the event was conducted in collaboration with international academic institutions including Syracuse University and Mid-West University. This collaboration created a strong platform for cross-border knowledge exchange and highlighted the importance of global partnerships in advancing innovation-led development.

The conference featured a series of technical sessions that explored key themes such as sustainable innovation ecosystems, climate-resilient agricultural solutions and strategies for scaling grassroots innovations to achieve inclusive growth. Discussions centered on how locally developed solutions can be adapted and implemented on a larger scale to address global challenges, particularly in emerging economies.

A major highlight of the event was the “Idea2Impact Bootcamp and Innovation Showcase,” which actively engaged students and early-stage innovators. Participants presented prototypes and real-world solutions aimed at solving pressing societal issues, demonstrating how frugal innovation can deliver high-impact outcomes with limited resources. The initiative reinforced the role of youth and entrepreneurship in shaping future innovation ecosystems.

The conference also emphasized the role of academic institutions in fostering innovation. Speakers highlighted the importance of creating environments that encourage experimentation, interdisciplinary research and entrepreneurial thinking. Educational institutions, they noted, play a critical role in bridging the gap between research and real-world application.

One of the key outcomes of GFI 2026 was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Birla Global University and Mid-West University. The agreement is expected to strengthen academic collaboration through faculty and student exchange programmes, joint research initiatives and entrepreneurship development activities. This partnership aims to enhance global exposure for students and promote collaborative innovation across borders.

Birla Global University continues to position itself as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship by promoting interdisciplinary learning and integrating emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and data analytics into its academic framework. Through initiatives like GFI 2026, the university is contributing to the development of an innovation-driven ecosystem that supports sustainable and inclusive growth.

Overall, the conference highlighted the growing importance of grassroots and frugal innovation in solving complex global challenges. By bringing together diverse stakeholders and encouraging collaboration, GFI 2026 reinforced the idea that impactful innovation often begins at the local level but has the potential to create meaningful change on a global scale.
