Bharat Forge and Liebherr-Aerospace launch advanced landing gear machining facility in Pune to strengthen India’s aerospace manufacturing!
Bharat Forge Limited has inaugurated a state-of-the-art landing gear components machining facility in Mundhwa, Pune, developed in collaboration with Liebherr-Aerospace & Transportation SAS. The new facility represents an important milestone in India’s growing aerospace manufacturing ecosystem and reinforces the country’s position as a strategic hub for high-value aerospace component production.
The advanced facility positions Bharat Forge among the first companies in India to operate OEM-approved machining capabilities for critical landing gear components at scale. Equipped with next-generation machining centers and precision engineering technologies, the plant will manufacture highly complex and precision-engineered landing gear components for global aerospace programs. These components play a crucial role in aircraft safety and performance, requiring extremely high manufacturing accuracy, strict quality standards and rigorous testing protocols.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior leadership from both organizations, reflecting the importance of the collaboration. Representatives from Liebherr-Aerospace included Martin Wandel, Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer; Philipp Walter, Managing Director at Liebherr-Aerospace Lindenberg GmbH; Bernd Schacherl, Director Procurement; and Sunil Kalra and Sanjay Prasad, Managing Directors at Liebherr India Private Limited. The Bharat Forge delegation was led by Amit Kalyani, Vice Chairman and Joint Managing Director, along with senior executives from the company’s aerospace division.
Speaking at the inauguration, Amit Kalyani emphasized that the new facility marks a significant step in Bharat Forge’s long-term aerospace strategy. He noted that the partnership with Liebherr-Aerospace highlights the confidence global aerospace companies have in Bharat Forge’s manufacturing capabilities. According to Kalyani, the launch of the facility goes beyond an operational milestone and reflects the company’s commitment to expanding advanced manufacturing capabilities, increasing value addition in India and strengthening the country’s aerospace supply chain.
Over the past decade, Bharat Forge has steadily expanded its presence in the aerospace sector. The company now offers a comprehensive manufacturing portfolio that includes aero-engine components, airframe structures and landing gear sub-systems used in both civil and defence aviation programs. Its aerospace division manufactures critical components such as turbine and compressor parts, forged rings, shafts, discs and structural elements that are used in modern aircraft platforms.
To further enhance its capabilities, Bharat Forge is also developing an advanced aerospace ring-mill in India. This facility will focus on producing high-value forged rings for global aero-engine programs and will support the company’s goal of offering integrated solutions across the aerospace manufacturing value chain.
Martin Wandel, Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of Liebherr-Aerospace & Transportation SAS, highlighted the importance of the collaboration between the two companies. He noted that the new facility demonstrates the shared commitment of Bharat Forge and Liebherr-Aerospace to innovation, precision engineering and global manufacturing excellence. According to Wandel, the partnership has enabled the creation of a highly advanced facility designed to meet the demanding quality and reliability standards of the global aerospace industry.
The collaboration also reflects a broader trend in the aerospace sector, where global manufacturers are increasingly diversifying supply chains and expanding partnerships with high-capability suppliers in emerging manufacturing markets. India’s growing engineering talent, strong industrial base and focus on advanced manufacturing have made it an attractive destination for aerospace production.
By establishing this advanced landing gear machining facility, Bharat Forge and Liebherr-Aerospace are contributing to the development of India’s aerospace manufacturing ecosystem. The facility is expected to support global aerospace programs while strengthening India’s position as a reliable supplier of high-precision, safety-critical aerospace components.
