ABB India Powers India’s Largest Pipeline with Smart Technology to Enhance Efficiency, Security, and Real-Time Monitoring!

ABB India has successfully delivered cutting-edge automation and digital solutions for Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.’s (IndianOil) vast 20,000 km-long oil and gas pipeline network, marking a significant step toward revolutionizing India’s energy infrastructure. This essential pipeline transports 125 million metric tonnes of oil and 49 million metric standard cubic metres of gas annually, ensuring energy security across multiple Indian states.

The integration of ABB’s advanced technologies forms the backbone of IndianOil’s new Centralised Pipeline Information Management System (CPIMS), designed to modernize and streamline pipeline operations. This project incorporates various innovative solutions to improve efficiency, productivity, and safety, which include:

  1. ABB Ability™ SCADAvantage: This solution provides real-time monitoring, ensuring that the entire pipeline network is constantly observed for any potential issues. Additionally, it supports cybersecurity measures to protect against digital threats and includes disaster recovery capabilities, ensuring continuity of operations during emergencies.
  2. Cloud-based Digital Solutions: These solutions enable centralized management of the pipeline operations, offering real-time data and insights that improve decision-making, streamline workflows, and boost overall operational efficiency.
  3. ABB Care Contract: As part of the agreement, ABB is offering a 10-year ABB Care contract, ensuring long-term service support for all pipelines under the CPIMS system. This contract aims to maintain the system’s optimal functionality and reduce downtime by providing continuous monitoring and timely maintenance.

The CPIMS project has been carefully crafted to address the complexities associated with maintaining and operating such a vast cross-country pipeline network. According to Senthil Kumar N, Director (Pipelines) at IndianOil, “By leveraging cutting-edge technology, this project aims to eliminate manual operations and enhance the efficiency, productivity, and availability of the pipeline network.”

The introduction of automated systems through CPIMS will eliminate many of the manual processes that previously slowed down operations, enabling a more efficient and reliable pipeline system. This solution is pivotal in optimizing the management of resources and improving safety, while also ensuring more effective monitoring and reporting.

As India’s energy demand continues to grow, driven by population increases and industrial development, ABB is at the forefront of creating smarter and more sustainable energy systems. G Balaji, Head of ABB Energy Industries in India, emphasized the company’s commitment, stating, “With energy demand growing in line with population increases, ABB is committed to supporting global energy security, while making existing energy systems leaner and cleaner.”

He added, “We are proud to partner with IndianOil on the CPIMS project, which marks a significant leap in pipeline operations’ efficiency, safety, integrity, and cybersecurity.”

ABB was awarded the contract for this critical project in February 2024. Despite the scale and complexity, ABB successfully delivered its integrated solutions within just a year. The CPIMS system is now under commissioning and will soon be fully operational, bringing a new level of control and precision to India’s largest oil and gas pipeline.

The successful implementation of the CPIMS system underlines ABB India’s ability to support the nation’s energy infrastructure with innovative and reliable solutions. This partnership between ABB and IndianOil is a step forward in ensuring India’s pipeline network operates with higher efficiency, greater safety, and improved environmental sustainability.

With this project, ABB is not only contributing to India’s energy security but is also shaping the future of pipeline operations by introducing cutting-edge technologies that promise to set new standards in the energy industry. As India continues to invest in smarter energy systems, ABB remains committed to leading the charge in creating more resilient and sustainable energy solutions.

As of now, the CPIMS system is set to redefine how pipeline operations are managed across the country, ensuring that India’s energy needs are met efficiently, securely, and sustainably.
