ABB India has taken a significant step in strengthening its manufacturing presence in the country with the expansion of its Peenya factory in Bengaluru. The company has inaugurated a new production line for Variable Speed Drive (VSD) modules, marking an important milestone in ABB’s ongoing commitment to support India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. With this expansion, ABB India has increased its local drive production capacity by approximately 25 percent, reinforcing its leadership in advanced automation and energy-efficient technologies.
Variable Speed Drives are critical in improving the energy efficiency and performance of electric motors across industrial applications. By controlling the motor speed to match the process demands, VSDs help industries reduce energy consumption and enhance productivity. ABB’s drives are already powering a wide range of sectors, including metals, cement, water management, buildings, data centers, and more. The new line will produce large power-rated drives tailored to these diverse sectors, helping industries meet their evolving efficiency and sustainability targets.
The new production line in Bengaluru incorporates advanced robotics, automation, and digital monitoring tools aligned with Industry 4.0 standards. It is ergonomically designed to enhance manufacturing precision, safety, and productivity. Integrated robotics automate the assembly of key drive components, ensuring superior energy efficiency and reliability. Meanwhile, digital production monitoring provides real-time visibility into operations, enabling data-driven decision-making and continuous quality improvement. ABB has also automated the material movement within the facility to streamline workflows, reduce manual handling, and further enhance workplace safety.
One of the most remarkable outcomes of this expansion is the expected reduction in lead times by up to 40 percent. By localizing production and introducing cutting-edge manufacturing technology, ABB can respond to customer demands more quickly and efficiently. Additionally, the new line has been designed to support “made-to-order” customization, giving customers across industries access to drives tailored to their specific operational requirements.
Speaking about this development, AR Madhusudan, Business Line Manager, Drive Products at ABB India, stated, “As we mark two decades of drives production in India, this expansion reinforces our strong commitment to advancing local production capabilities and delivering energy-efficient technologies for India’s industries. With our focus on localization, ABB India’s expanded and upgraded drives factory will cater to customers with greater reliability, speed, and agility, leveraging cutting-edge automation.”
Echoing the sentiment, Tuomo Hoysniemi, Division President, Drive Products, ABB Motion, emphasized the company’s long-term vision: “As India accelerates its sustainability goals, ABB drives are playing a crucial role in enabling energy efficiency in Indian industries. By building stronger local ecosystems, we are helping industries become more energy-efficient while improving customer proximity.”
This expansion coincides with ABB celebrating 50 years of global innovation in variable speed drives and 20 years of drives manufacturing excellence in India. From powering metros and airports to driving efficiency in sectors such as pharmaceuticals and metals, ABB’s drives have been at the heart of India’s industrial growth. With the latest expansion, ABB India strengthens its role in enabling the nation’s transition toward cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable industrial operations.
