Lawsontubes: From Supply to Manufacture — A New Chapter Begins
At MTDCNC, we meet a lot of passionate engineers and forward-thinking companies — but some stories…
A major boost to North Wales’ economy is on the horizon as Knauf Insulation announces a £170 million investment in a new, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Shotton. This landmark project is set to create around 140 direct jobs, with many more expected through the wider supply chain, as the company expands its presence in the UK.
The advanced facility will produce over 100,000 tonnes of non-combustible rock mineral wool insulation annually, using cutting-edge UK-first Submerged Arc Furnace technology. The product will be low in embodied carbon, fully recyclable, and designed to meet the growing demand for safer, more energy-efficient, and sustainable buildings.
The timing of the announcement aligns with the UK-EU Summit held on Monday, 19 May, reflecting the UK Government’s broader strategy to drive economic growth, attract inward investment, and solidify the UK’s reputation as a global hub for advanced manufacturing.
Jo Stevens, Secretary of State for Wales, welcomed the announcement, calling it “fantastic news for North Wales” and a clear endorsement of the UK Government’s mission to grow the economy and position Britain as a prime location for industrial investment.
Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the region’s talent and infrastructure: “This is a major investment that reflects the strength of North Wales’ industrial capabilities. We’ll continue to support the project as it moves forward.”
Minister for Investment, Baroness Gustafsson, added: “This is another clear signal that the UK – and North Wales in particular – is open for business. Our modern Industrial Strategy, with advanced manufacturing as a priority sector, will continue to attract projects like this and generate long-term opportunity across the country.”
Neil Hargreaves, Managing Director of Knauf Insulation Northern Europe, noted the alignment between the company’s goals and regional ambitions. “This new facility supports both sustainability and economic development, reinforcing our commitment to North Wales and to building a greener future.”
Backed by joint efforts from the UK Government, Welsh Government, and local leaders, the investment complements initiatives like the North Wales Growth Deal and the Flintshire and Wrexham Investment Zone. This expansion further cements North Wales as a rising centre for sustainable, advanced manufacturing.
