The Ceratizit Standard will seek to reduce the carbon footprint.

At EMO Hanover 2023, Ceratizit will propose the first standard for calculating and classifying the CO2 footprint of carbide goods. In conjunction with a score and categorization system, the Luxembourg-based carbide specialist claims it will boost transparency with carbon footprint at the product level and urges other carbide industry participants to participate.

“Our goal is to create a market-wide standard for calculating and categorising the carbon footprint of cutting tools, hard material solutions, and tungsten carbide powders.” As a result, we will be able to give clients with the necessary carbon footprint information,” adds executive board spokesman Andreas Lackner.

Any product sheet or sales document can include the alphabetic product carbon footprint (PCF) classification. Ceratizit will roll out the PCF categorization across its product portfolio over the coming months, introduce complementary products and services, and urge customers, partners, and other industrial actors to use the newly created standard.

The respective corporate carbon footprint (CCF, i.e., the CO2 footprint of the entire company) serves as the basis for the PCF computation. According to the ISO 14067:2018 standard, the PCF includes not only the emissions attributable to Scopes 1 and 2, but also the upstream portion of Scope 3 emissions, which can be assigned to specific products (purchased goods and services, upstream transportation and distribution, and waste generated during operations). Ceratizit employs the cradle-to-gate method and avoids downstream emissions to place greater attention on client needs.

Ceratizit is able to determine precise statistics for the PCF due to a fully integrated raw material supply chain. “Our ambition is to lead the carbide industry into a sustainable future,” adds Lackner. Customers must, however, choose between a conventional product with detailed PCF transparency and a solution with a particularly low CO2 footprint. We provide the foundation for making educated judgements with ease with our standard.”
