Precision in Partnership – MMC Hardmetal and GROB Deliver a Day of ‘Machining Excellence’

Technical days influenced by technical people – and today was no exception.

Chloe Reeve and Joe Amos were on-site at GROB machine tools for a standout technical event held in partnership with MMC Hardmetal UK Ltd. This collaborative showcase brought together machining specialists, cutting tool experts, and industry professionals for a day packed with live demonstrations, great discussions, and state-of-the-art technology.

A Full Spectrum of Cutting Solutions

The event focused on delivering real-world machining solutions through live demos featuring a variety of cutting tools engineered for every industry — from aerospace and automotive to medical and general engineering. Attendees had the opportunity to see these tools pushed to their limits on a high-performance GROB G350 5-Axis Universal Milling Machine.

One standout demonstration featured the VQJCS chip-splitting end mill, run on the GROB G350, showcasing exceptional performance and precision. The full machining setup included:

  • Machine: GROB G350 Universal Milling Machine
  • Workholding: LANG Vice
  • Toolholding: Schüssler High-Precision Collet Holder
  • Tool: VQJCSD1200 (12mm diameter with 36mm cut length)

Cutting parameters for this demo included:

  • Entry: Helical at 5 degrees to a depth of 36mm
  • Strategy: Trochoidal milling
  • Cut depth (Ap): 36mm
  • Step over (Ae): 1mm
  • Cutting speed (Vc): 400 m/min (12,740 RPM)
  • Feed per tooth (Fz): 0.2 (Max feed rate: 12,740 mm/min)

The G350 handled the application with ease, thanks to its compact footprint, horizontal spindle design, and integrated rotary axes, the G350 delivers high-precision machining ideal for complex part geometries. The combination of this advanced machine with MMC’s chip-splitting tooling resulted in efficient chip evacuation, low cutting forces, and outstanding surface quality.

A Day of Insight and Innovation

From live demonstrations to expert Q&A sessions, the event reflected the best of British and European manufacturing innovation. Industry leaders shared not just tools and machines, but knowledge — the kind that drives continuous improvement and pushes manufacturing forward.

As Chloe Reeve put it: “It’s days like these that remind us why collaboration is so vital in this industry — when tooling, machine technology, and expertise come together, real progress happens.”
