During a recent visit, MTDCNC’s Tom Skubala and Chris Thomas spent time with Ashley, a highly experienced user of hyperMILL, who brings over a decade of expertise to the shopfloor.

Operating a suite of four DMG MORI machines, Ashley has built his business around capability, quality, and intelligent CAM utilisation. A standout element of his workflow is a highly efficient programming strategy focused on reducing lead times and maximising spindle utilisation.

Rather than fully programming a job before machining begins, Ashley initiates production by programming only the roughing operations. This approach allows the machine to begin cutting material within minutes, immediately generating value on the shopfloor. While the machine is running, he continues programming the remaining operations in hyperMILL, effectively overlapping programming and machining to significantly improve overall efficiency.

This method highlights how smart CAM strategies can unlock additional capacity without further capital investment, a critical advantage in today’s competitive manufacturing landscape.

Beyond production, Ashley is also committed to developing the next generation of engineers. He is a strong advocate for apprenticeships, providing hands-on opportunities within his business, and is actively supporting Oxford Brookes Racing by machining uprights for their latest race car.
