From Hobby to High Precision: A Visit to Qualtek Engineering in Scotland

Last week, our very own Tom Skubula and Joe travelled north to visit Qualtek Engineering, nestled in the heart of Scotland.

On site, they caught up with Ewan, the passionate force behind Qualtek. What started as a personal interest in machining has grown into a thriving business — one that now designs and sells custom tooling and manufactures replacement parts for vintage engines that are otherwise impossible to find.

Ewan’s journey from hobbyist to precision engineer is inspiring, and it’s powered by some clever choices in equipment — including the MicroLoc workholding system from MICRON WORKHOLDING LIMITED.

The MicroLoc system has been a game-changer in his workflow, not only speeding up production but also expanding his available work area. Now fully integrated into his 4th axis setup, the system allows Ewan to produce and modify engine blocks with impressive precision and repeatability.

It’s always a privilege to see how technology empowers small businesses and craftspeople to do extraordinary things — and Qualtek Engineering is a great example of that in action.

Stay tuned for more from this visit — and a big thank you to Ewan for sharing his story and showing us around!
