The mill-turn evolution that’s changing the game.
What started in the ’90s as a compound slide lathe has evolved into today’s powerhouse multi-axis…
BK Aerospace, based in Alabama, has just taken delivery of a powerful new addition to its machining lineup: the DN Solutions PUMA 3100XLY. Known for precision aerospace machining and complex part production, BK Aerospace is continuing its growth trajectory with a machine designed for long, heavy-duty turning applications—and it’s turning heads.
The PUMA 3100XLY is no ordinary lathe. This box-way horizontal turning center is built for high-torque, high-stability machining, offering exceptional rigidity for large-diameter and long-part turning. With a maximum turning length of 2,125 mm (just under 7 feet), this machine can comfortably handle demanding applications that go well beyond typical lathe capabilities.
For BK Aerospace, which specializes in tight-tolerance components for the aerospace and defense industries, this investment brings more than just added capacity—it’s about unlocking new production possibilities.
“This machine allows us to take on parts we simply couldn’t run before,” said the team at BK Aerospace. “It gives us the stability and reach we need for long shafts, structural components, and other precision-turned parts that require both accuracy and strength.”
The PUMA 3100XLY features a long Y-axis stroke, allowing for complex off-center milling and drilling, a crucial function for aerospace parts that often require multi-operation setups. Its box guideways ensure thermal and cutting stability during heavy cuts, while the integrated sub-spindle and live tooling capabilities turn what would be multiple operations into a single, efficient process.
BK Aerospace’s investment reflects a growing trend in the sector—moving toward multitasking and extended-bed turning centers that allow for more efficient handling of complex, larger-format components. With growing demand across commercial and military aerospace programs, having machines that can meet both dimensional and throughput requirements is essential.
DN Solutions, formerly Doosan Machine Tools, continues to lead the pack in turning center technology, and the PUMA series remains a trusted name in high-performance lathe work across industries. With full support from DN’s distribution and technical service network, BK Aerospace is well-equipped to maximize their new machine from day one.
As they continue expanding capabilities and capacity, BK Aerospace is clearly ready to reach new heights—both literally and figuratively.
