Tormach is showcasing its latest 15LX CNC lathe at IMTS 2026, introducing a machine designed to deliver greater cutting performance, faster motion control and enhanced operational flexibility for modern machining environments. Built for manufacturers seeking an efficient turning solution for prototyping, small-batch production and automated manufacturing systems, the 15LX combines increased spindle power, high-speed axis movements and an advanced EtherCAT-based control platform. The machine also incorporates several productivity-focused improvements, including upgraded coolant management, real-time performance monitoring and expanded tooling capabilities.

As manufacturers continue to demand shorter lead times and greater production flexibility, CNC lathes are expected to deliver higher productivity without sacrificing machining accuracy or ease of operation. Whether producing precision prototypes, custom components or low-volume production runs, modern turning centres must provide rapid setup, reliable performance and the ability to integrate with increasingly automated manufacturing workflows. The Tormach 15LX has been developed with these requirements in mind, offering a compact yet capable solution suitable for machine shops, educational facilities and production environments alike.

One of the most significant upgrades on the 15LX is its enhanced spindle performance. The machine delivers 6 horsepower of continuous spindle power, with the ability to reach 10 horsepower peak output during demanding cutting operations. This additional power enables the lathe to perform heavier cuts more efficiently while maintaining stable machining performance across a wide range of materials. The increased spindle capability supports improved material removal rates, allowing manufacturers to reduce machining times and increase productivity without compromising surface finish or dimensional accuracy.

The 15LX also benefits from an advanced EtherCAT-based control system, providing faster communication between machine components and more responsive motion control. EtherCAT technology enables high-speed data exchange across the machine, supporting smoother axis movements, improved synchronisation and greater overall machine performance. The upgraded control platform contributes to enhanced machining precision while providing the responsiveness required for complex turning operations.

To further improve productivity, the machine offers rapid traverse speeds of up to 360 inches per minute (ipm) on both the X and Z axes. These faster rapid movements reduce non-cutting time between machining operations, helping shorten overall cycle times and improve throughput during production. Combined with an extended 14-inch Z-axis travel, the machine provides greater flexibility for machining longer workpieces and accommodating a wider variety of component sizes.

Despite its expanded capabilities, the 15LX maintains a compact machine footprint, making it suitable for workshops where floor space is at a premium. The redesigned machine layout also incorporates an improved chip and coolant evacuation system, helping maintain a cleaner work area while reducing manual intervention during production. Efficient chip management contributes to longer tool life, improved machining consistency and reduced maintenance requirements.

Operator convenience has also been enhanced through a new 21.5-inch operator console featuring built-in Wi-Fi connectivity. The larger display provides improved visibility of machine controls and production information, while integrated wireless communication supports easier software updates and network connectivity within modern manufacturing environments. The machine also incorporates 23-bit absolute encoder servo systems across all machine axes and the turret, delivering highly accurate positioning and eliminating the need for homing procedures after power cycles.

The 15LX is supplied with a comprehensive range of standard equipment designed to simplify operation and improve productivity. These include a fully enclosed machine, an integrated stand with chip tray, an automatic lubrication system, a turret and a redesigned flood coolant system equipped with an external washdown hose for easier machine cleaning. Another significant improvement is the introduction of a single pulley ratio, eliminating the need for manual gear changes and allowing operators to switch between machining operations more efficiently.

To help operators monitor machining performance in real time, the machine includes integrated load meters for both the spindle and machine axes. These live performance indicators provide immediate feedback on machine loading, enabling operators to optimise cutting conditions, prevent overload situations and maintain consistent machining performance.

The 15LX also offers excellent tooling flexibility, supporting both turret tooling and gang tooling configurations to suit different production requirements. Additional automation-ready features include automated collet closing and parts-catching capabilities, enabling more efficient unattended operation. The machine is also compatible with a range of optional accessories, including oil skimmers, air guns and updated gang tooling kits, allowing manufacturers to customise the system for specific machining applications.

By combining increased spindle power, high-speed motion control, advanced digital technology and versatile tooling options, the Tormach 15LX provides manufacturers with a compact yet capable CNC turning solution. At IMTS 2026, Tormach is demonstrating how intelligent machine design and enhanced automation features can help manufacturers improve productivity, streamline machining operations and efficiently produce precision components across a wide range of turning applications.
