Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt Ltd (HMSI) has announced a significant expansion of its manufacturing operations with the addition of a third production line at its Tapukara facility in Alwar. The move is aimed at meeting rising demand in India’s two-wheeler market while strengthening the company’s long-term production capabilities.

The new production line is expected to become operational in 2028 and will add an annual capacity of 670,000 units. With this expansion, the total capacity of the Tapukara plant will increase to approximately 2.01 million units per year. The project is also set to generate more than 2,000 new jobs, contributing to regional economic growth and reinforcing Rajasthan’s position as an emerging manufacturing hub.

According to Tsutsumu Otani, the expansion aligns with India’s evolving mobility landscape. He emphasized that strengthening the Tapukara manufacturing ecosystem will enhance operational flexibility, improve resilience and enable the company to respond more effectively to changing market demands. The new line will be designed to support the production of both commuter motorcycles and scooters, ensuring adaptability across product segments.

The investment for the expansion is estimated at approximately ₹15 billion and includes the acquisition of additional land to support future growth. This forward-looking approach highlights HMSI’s commitment to scaling its operations in line with long-term market opportunities.

The announcement was also welcomed by Bhajan Lal Sharma, who noted that such investments strengthen the state’s industrial ecosystem, create employment opportunities and attract further manufacturing activity. The expansion is expected to contribute to the development of the local automotive supply chain and support ancillary industries in the region.

HMSI currently operates four manufacturing facilities across India, including plants in Manesar, Tapukara, Narsapura and Vithalapur, with a combined annual production capacity of 6.25 million units. Since commencing operations in 2001, the company has produced more than 70 million two-wheelers, reflecting its strong presence and sustained growth in the Indian market.

In addition to the Tapukara expansion, HMSI is also progressing with capacity enhancement at its Vithalapur plant in Gujarat, where a fourth production line is expected to be operational by 2027. These developments form part of the company’s broader strategy to strengthen its manufacturing network and prepare for future demand growth.

Sustainability remains a key focus for HMSI as it expands its operations. In line with Honda Motor Company’s global goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, the company continues to integrate environmentally responsible practices such as renewable energy adoption, water conservation and resource efficiency into its manufacturing processes.

Overall, the expansion of the Tapukara facility underscores HMSI’s commitment to India as a strategic market. By investing in capacity, technology and sustainability, the company is positioning itself to meet the next phase of mobility demand while contributing to industrial growth and employment generation in the country.
