CUMI doubles production capacity with new Hosur cutting and grinding wheel facility!
Carborundum Universal Limited has commenced commercial production at its newly established cutting and grinding wheel manufacturing facility in Hosur, marking a major expansion of its abrasives business and reinforcing its position as a leading materials engineering solutions provider.
The new plant focuses on the production of thin cutting and grinding wheels and represents a key milestone following CUMI’s 2023 acquisition of manufacturing lines, technology and brand assets from DRONCO GmbH. These advanced systems have now been successfully relocated and integrated into the Hosur facility, enabling the company to localize global technology and enhance its domestic manufacturing capabilities.
With the commissioning of this facility, CUMI has significantly expanded its annual production capacity for cutting and grinding wheels—from 45 million units to over 90 million units. This doubling of capacity positions the company to meet rising demand from industries such as fabrication, general engineering and construction, where abrasives play a critical role in machining, finishing and material processing operations.
The Hosur plant is equipped with advanced manufacturing technologies designed to ensure consistent quality and operational efficiency. A key feature is its state-of-the-art mixing system, which incorporates SCADA-based process controls to enable precise handling and uniform blending of raw materials. This level of process control helps maintain consistency in product performance across large production volumes.
In addition, the facility includes automated press lines integrated with unmanned oven handling and curing systems. These automation-driven processes reduce manual intervention, improve throughput and enhance production reliability. The use of automation also contributes to improved safety and repeatability in manufacturing operations.
To further ensure product consistency, the plant incorporates an ambient control system that maintains stable environmental conditions throughout the production process. This is particularly important in abrasives manufacturing, where variations in temperature and humidity can affect raw material behavior and final product quality.
The facility has also achieved certification from the Organization for the Safety of Abrasives (oSa), a globally recognized standard for the safety and quality of abrasive tools. This certification underscores CUMI’s commitment to meeting stringent international standards and delivering reliable, high-performance products to its customers.
The project has been developed with an investment of approximately ₹83 crore and is expected to generate an annual turnover of around ₹160 crore at peak capacity utilization. This investment aligns with CUMI’s broader strategy of strengthening its manufacturing footprint and expanding its presence in high-growth industrial segments.
Founded in 1954 and part of the Murugappa Group, CUMI operates as a fully integrated “mines-to-market” enterprise, with capabilities spanning mining, power generation, fusion, manufacturing and distribution. This integrated model enables the company to maintain control over its value chain while delivering a wide range of products including abrasives, ceramics, electrominerals and refractories.
With the launch of its Hosur facility, CUMI is well positioned to capitalize on increasing industrial demand while leveraging advanced manufacturing technologies to deliver higher quality, improved efficiency and greater competitiveness in both domestic and global markets.
