Sandvik Coromant has introduced the CoroTap 100 series with -PM geometry, a range of straight-flute cut taps designed to deliver reliable and uninterrupted threading performance in ISO P materials. The new taps incorporate a high-performance chipbreaking design that helps reduce production interruptions while eliminating the need for manual chip removal during machining operations.

Threading operations, particularly in blind holes, often face challenges related to chip accumulation and evacuation. Poor chip control can lead to tool breakage, surface defects and frequent production stoppages. The CoroTap 100 series addresses these challenges through an optimized chipbreaking design that separates chips effectively, enabling a smoother and more stable threading process. By minimizing chip buildup, the tool helps maintain continuous machining and reduces the need for operator intervention.

One of the key features of the CoroTap 100 taps is their ability to manage chips efficiently during threading. The -PM geometry incorporates a specialized chipbreaker chamfer that divides chips into smaller segments, allowing them to evacuate more easily from the cutting zone. This design helps maintain thread accuracy and surface quality while preventing chip entanglement that can disrupt machining operations.

For blind hole applications, the CoroTap 100 series is optimized for internal coolant delivery. Coolant supplied directly through the tool assists with chip removal and heat dissipation, ensuring a cleaner machining environment and improved thread finish. In through-hole applications, Sandvik Coromant recommends external coolant supplied through collets or nozzles to achieve optimal chip evacuation and cutting performance.

Beyond the -PM geometry, the CoroTap 100 family offers a broad selection of tapping solutions tailored to various material groups. The range includes geometries designed for ISO P, K, N and H materials, making it suitable for diverse machining environments and applications. The product lineup also features multiple tap types, including straight-flute taps, spiral point taps, spiral flute taps and forming taps, giving manufacturers flexibility to select the most appropriate tool for their specific threading requirements.

According to Cory Carpenter, global product and digital application specialist at Sandvik Coromant, integrating precise chip management with high-quality threading allows manufacturers to maintain steady production with minimal operator involvement. He noted that while the chipbreaker chamfer design may appear subtle, its implementation on two flutes enables efficient chip separation without compromising thread accuracy or finish.

By combining advanced chip control, optimized coolant delivery and a wide selection of geometries, the CoroTap 100 series supports safer machining environments and more consistent production output. The new taps are designed to help manufacturers achieve stable threading performance, improved productivity and reduced downtime in demanding metalworking applications.
